Castanet no longer available?
« on: 3 Jan 2011, 07:34 pm »
I just noticed that the Castanet is no longer listed on Hagtech as a half-kit.  It would be sad if this fantastic product is no longer available as I have so very much enjoyed mine.

Well, that's surprising, since it's my best headphone amp

Could we at least have the pdf manual available somewhere? If we have any future problem with our builds, it would be very handy.

Having never heard it,, what headphone amplifiers could you compare it to? I have a SP-PPX 3 that I like, but have always been curious about the Castanet. Thanks

I've never had the Castanet, so can't say anything about it.

I have the Castanet, as well as the Bottlehead Speedball Crack and the Millett Hybrid MiniMax, and I prefer the Castanet by far: great bass, great detail retrieval and it feels very alive. The Crack is bright and you need a high impedance headphone to get any bass, while the MiniMax is very two dimensional (I didn't get any soundstage with it).

For more info, I posted a lengthy comparaison at headf-fi: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/newestpost/503622

The only complaint I have heard about the Castanet is volume or lack there of with some headphones.  I hope Jim is working on the Castanet2 and just ran out of Castanet1 boards.  I was thinking about building one once I finish my Clarinet.  guess I waited too long.   :(

I wouldn't say there's a lack of volume. It just isn't loud. That's plugged direct. With a line stage or other preamp ahead of it, one should be able to hurt oneself.

Yup. If you're using a preamp with a volume control, jumper the one in the Castanet and use that.

I still have CASTANET boards - they can be special ordered.  The RIPPER is gone with no more stock.
