I like to check out what other people are listening to and the end of year lists are a good starting point. I end up liking maybe 10% of what I hear, it seems like the new musicians these days have a brilliant idea for a good 30 second song - unfortunately their songs last for another 4 minutes, I guess I'm easily bored.
I really like roots music, it speaks to my soul. Last night Laurie Starr, host of Starr Tracks, played her favorites of 2010. It was an excellent set and I'll end up buying most of the albums. Here is her play list, take a listen if most new music these days leaves you cold (or bored):
Radio Zumbido, Los Ultimos Dias Del AM
Chris Smither, Drive you home again
Todd Snider, Happy to be here
Dave Van Ronk, The Folkways years
Josh Ritter, So Runs The World Away
Fred Eaglesmith, Cha Cha Cha
Pieta Brown (Greg Brown's daughter), One and All
Slaid Cleaves, One Good Year, Holiday Sampler, Philo Records
Greg Brown, Honey in the Lions Head
Last week KXCI's listeners voted for their favorite top 10 albums, I like short lists - they are more to the point:
#10 Mumford & Sons, Sigh No More
#9 Arcade Fire, The Suburbs
#8 Norah Jones, The Fall
#7 Tom Petty, Mojo
#6 Michael Franti & Spearhead, Sound of Sunshine
#5 Los Lobos, Tin Can Trust
#4 Ray LaMontagne And The Pariah Dogs, God Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise
#3 Spoon, Transference
#2 The Black Keys, Brothers
#1 Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, I Learned the Hard Way
What's your top 10 albums of 2010?
