You know, I loves me some 70's EJ- grew up listening to it and still enjoy those records but these comments just come across as crochety bitching from the rocker on the porch ( pun intended ). Sir Elton is really coming across these days as nostalgic, a little afraid of the new and frankly a little bitter that he seems to have been left behind. His appearances on "Spectacle With Elvis Costello " were in a similar vein and I hope that he doesn't damage his legacy because his achevements are many and great. And let's call a spade a spade here: on the topic of "pretty awful songwriting ", since his heyday, Elton has made his share and then some of pretty mediocre albums and frankly dreadful singles so pot-kettle-black. Oh, and do you think you could live the rest of your life without ever hearing `Crocodile Rock`again ? Captain Fantastic was a fine piece of work but it was also long, long ago so, brave sir knight, perhaps you should put up or shut up...Consider the options as outlined by your contemporaries, Elton: you could actually embrace the best of the new generation like David Bowie did with Arcade Fire and TV on the Radio, or you could just trade on the glories of the past and keep doing what you do best like James Taylor or you could just chuck your cred altogether and rape the Great American Songbook like Rod Stewart but don`t just turn into Grampa Simpson because that`s just so sad...

Seems like no matter who you are, there's a finite amount of good stuff you'll be able to produce in your lifetime.  The real trick is filtering your output so all the garbage isn't seen\heard and secondly, once you've revealed all your best material, knowing when to stop.
