There's an interesting article over on slate dot com about the emergence of USB dacs. It talks about the fact that both CDs and then MP3s sacrificed audio quality for convenience. But there's a chance to turn that around and get good sound again with a simple gadget - the USB dac.

Don't get me wrong, I love my USB DAC, but unfortunately, I think it's probably still too much for the average consumer.  USB DACs are already difficult for many Audiophiles to contemplate.

Still, it's nice that it's getting a little bit of quasi-mainstream press as you say.
