Liebert UPS for amplifiers
« on: 16 Dec 2010, 10:07 pm »
About a year ago I moved into a new place and the voltage was very low and there wasn't much I could do about it.  I remembered reading a thread on Audio Circle and I ended up purchasing a Liebert GXT2 1500 VA UPS.

This was the thread:

When I recently commented on this thread:

More than one person commented that the Liebert is really a step backwards.

Any more thoughts on the Liebert, is there a new consensus opinion?

I'm curious about this too, as I've never heard it and it definitely isn't the case for me.

I purchased the same unit and found it a welcome step forward.  My next step is to replace the fan (or is it fans in this unit?).  Very happy with my purchase and the results.

Personally I found the sound to improve but the fan noise turned into distraction.  Once I figure out how to reduce the fan noise and hide the Liebert it is going back in.  I will have to plug it in at the next RAVE.

Guys, you need to definitely replace the fan(s).  Super easy and makes them practically silent.

Recommended fans are in the original Liebert thread.

Thanks Jim.  Will read through the thread to find the location and time of fans.

I prefer not to call my landlord, call the utility company, etc. if it can be helped.  I don't quite have the capacity to take on another project, even if it means that other people do the work and not me.

Do I notice a step back sonically?  No.  But I'm comparing against the very sub-optimal wall power -- and the voltage from the wall is all over the place.  I don't have power available to the house which would act as a reasonable base line for comparison.

There were 2 fans to be replaced in mine, and rather than use solder or a wire wrap, I purchased 2 pin to 3 pin converters.  Couldn't figure out what type I needed (they are not interoperable), so I just ordered all 4 of them.

There are styles A, B, C, and D.  They're 99 cents each, and they came unlabeled, so I still don't know which type is the appropriate one.  A bit of a waste, but a waste that cost me $8, so not a big deal.
