St. Louis Public Radio Community Engagement Event
« on: 19 Oct 2010, 02:36 am »
Just a friendly reminder that Kal Rubinson of Stereophile's Music in the Round will join David Young and Terrance Dupuis at the Chesterfield The Sound Room one month from now, at 7 pm, Friday Nov. 19th, to talk multichannel audio and HD Radio.  Please RSVP Jeff Bewley at St. Louis Public Radio at (314) 516-5494 or jbewley@stlpublicradio.org at your earliest convenience if you want to attend.  (We need a headcount for refreshments, etc.).

Guys, we all need to step up to the plate on this one. Please tell everyone you can and urge them to come along. If we get a good turn out for this there is a strong chance that we may be able to get some more audio dignitaries in the future.

All set to be there on the 19th Tim. Any chance of unleashing a real "hi-fi" multi-channel set-up to experience (matching speakers, prescribed 5 channel positioning, etc.)? -David

I don't know what is being set up with regards to equipment but I'm sure it won't be low fi.

Didn't mean to suggest SoundRoom's set-up would be anything BUT HI-fi! (Sorry 'bout that Tim)

Let me rephrase my friend...I've never had an oppotrutnity to hear a multichannel audio set-up without some compromise (like a bit of the "mid"-fi elements that I have to rely on when I go 5.1 at home). Looking forward to a chance to experience 100% hi-fi, multichannel audio listening!

Glad I looked at this again.  I'm planning to be there but had it in my head that it was at the other location, not the Chesterfield one.   :duh:  See y'all tonight.

Food for thought (or discussion) this evening...

The Yo-Yo Ma/Colorado Symphony surround-sound broadcast last December on Public Radio has been fairly well publicized (here's a couple articles). Would love to hear surround SLO broadcasts! Maybe we can get some insight this evening? :dunno:

See ya tonight,

Thanks to Donald and St Louis Public Radio for making last night a very enjoyable event. I am pleased to hear that while the rest of the country seems to be telling of the demise of radio broadcasting, for us in St Louis it is going to get bigger and better. More local programming with possibly performances from The Sheldon and The Bistro. This is great news for The St Louis music listener.
Also thanks to my GAS friends , who never fail to turn up in numbers and help make these events a success. It was great seeing you all last night.

Thanks Tim, I enjoyed being there. It was wonderful to take off the schoolteacher hat for a little while. I'll be in touch with you soon.

First, thanks to all the GASers that attended.  Kal Rubinson was very impressed and wants to return in 2012.  Our goal is to have either Robert Harley or Anthony Cordesman from TAS next year.

Terrence Dupuis and Mike Pappas are acquaintances and are talking multichannel broadcasting of the SLSO Saturday nite broadcasts using the DTS Neural encoding gear that Mike has been using in Colorado.  It turns out that the SLSO records every concert in 5.1 digital surround on the 8th floor of Powell Hall for potential release on SACD and sends a two-channel digital down mix to the stations " studio" on the 7th floor.  If we use a DaySequerra DTS down mixer to encode the steering signals, we're in the multichannel business !  The stereo digital signal is 100% compatible with every HD Radio out there, and for those receivers / processors with DTS decoders and HD Radio tuners, selection of "DTS Neural" will give you lossless 5.1.  Very Cool.

The only issue is we need the bandwidth of all three HD channels to do this, so for 2 hours on Saturday nite, HD-2 and HD-3 might have to go off the air.  We are working on the least disruptive way to do this.

Thanks again for your interest in STLPR, Don Bingaman
