Sonos Soundbar and Sub -- Shockingly Good
« on: 21 Dec 2016, 11:02 pm »
So I just replaced my Anthem MRX 710 and Paradigm Signature S8s (my 'home theater' system as it was, which I also used to listen to music on once in a while) with a Sonos Soundbar/Sub combo.

What has surprised me is how good the Sonos is with music! Using Spotify premium service. Listen to jazz mostly, female vocals and traditional straight ahead trios from the 50s/60s. Really decent sound if you don't push it to super high volume levels.

What is equally surprising is how mediocre the Sonos is for HT. My source is Amazon Prime connected via my digital out from my Roku player (my TV does not have a direct digital out). While OK, nothing to write home about. Recognizing that my source for HT is just stereo at best, it is still weaker then the same source was through my Anthem/Paradigm set-up.

Have others had a similar experience?

Sonos bar / sub are among the best in their category. The sub in particular is actually quite fast and "tuneful" - pity you can't use it with non Sonos gear.

I think with HT you may be reaching it's limit - they're just isn't the diaphragm real estate - or power - to do major macro-dynamics. No replacement for displacement - and power. Because it does so well at a lower level I think these limitations become more noticeable and disappointing.

Enjoy what you have - just at more model levels!  You'd have to spend a lot more to get more.

The Denon HEOS home theater(soundbar and sub) does quite nicely with surround applications.  I would say it has some limitations for volume in a large room but can fill a reasonable sized room.  Largest benefit of the Denon soundbar/sub is that it comes as one unit.  Cost is almost half of Sonos for equal pieces.  Just throwing it out there for consideration.
