No you don't, that where the little switch in the kit does, you actually can use 6 V or 12 V on Dodd buffer.

The DIY kits come with a voltage regulator and a switch.  Ths allows the buffer to use 12V or 6V tubes, we just have to make certain the switch is in the correct position for the tubes voltage.  With the 6H30 the current draw is high enough that a larger heatsink is required to dissapate the heat generated than what is shipped with the kit, so the small heatsink that is shipped with the kit must be replaced with something larger.

Best,
Ed

Trung & Ed,

That's great news!  I'm so happy I don't need to buy a 6V battery & charger.

6H30 still uses 12VDC.  Right?
Like they said - 6V.  If you are still using the 2 tube preamp you will have to install two 7806 regulators with heat sinks to make this all happen OR run both of the tube heaters in series to be happy on 12V.  You'll have to ask Gary which of the wires on the modules are for the heater circuit so you can do so.  This is why I converted to the single tube version with the switchable 6V regulator.

Lucky for me part of being one of the first purchasers of the buffer, I got to pay $150 for the conversion kit.
