SSD deal good or bad?
« on: 23 Nov 2010, 07:47 pm »
Would this be a good deal: $84.99 after MIR 64GB SSD (to be use as an OS drive on PC including music server)?  Newegg is saying it goes on sale tomorrow at 1 PST.  I am assuming MIR is Manufacturer's Instant Rebate and there would be no rebate form to fill.

What kind?

The one that I posted last week was a really good deal IMO.

They don't say what brand.  I am assuming it's a 2.5" SATA II internal drive.

90GB for $149.99 vs. 65GB for $84.99:  Do you need the extra 25 GB for running OS and essential programs?

No on the extra GB but MLC or SLC is important.

Read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive

MLC vs SLC
Lower priced drives usually use multi-level cell (MLC) flash memory, which is slower and less reliable than single-level cell (SLC) flash memory.[27][28] This can be mitigated or even reversed by the internal design structure of the SSD, such as interleaving, changes to writing algorithms,[28] and higher over-provisioning (more excess capacity) with which the wear-leveling algorithms can work.[29][30][31]

However, SLC drives are currently still very expensive.  Newegg lists a 64GB Kingston drive for $715 and an OCZ 256GB for $4900.

The difference between MLC and SLC is in latency.  Throughput's measured in MB/s are very similar.

MLC based drive latency is on the order of 6,250 times longer than SLC based drives.  But we're talking 500ms vs. 80μs.  These numbers mean something for critical realtime operations but are almost meaningless for audio use.
