DIY Floorstanders: What Are My Options?

Hello,

I recently built a sealed Stryke AV12 subwoofer with my father, and after he heard how good it sounded, decided that he wanted to build a nice pair of floorstanders for his bedroom.

So far, based on reviews, impressions, and my gut feeling, I'm almost definitely going with the Adire HE12.1.  The vented variant is just over 4' tall, extends down to the 30s/40s, and, best of all, has a great high efficiency of 96 dB/1W/1m.

However, I know little about the competition in this price range.  The GR AV/3 immediately comes to mind, but outside of that, I'm clueless.  So, what do you guys think I can build at or around the $500 pricepoint?  It'd need a 30s/40s F3, efficient enough to be driven by a 50 wpc amplifier, and noticeably better than the Axiom M3tis he has now.

Here's hoping,
Peter
