What test equipment for DIY projects?
« on: 2 Nov 2010, 07:57 pm »
I am curious as to what people use/recommend. In my opinion some are must haves and others are nice to have:

Must have:
- Tube tester (if you use tubes)
- DMM
- Oscilloscope
- Audio function generator (sine + square wave)

Nice to have:
- VTVM
- Capacitance meter
What else?

Let us know what you have and give us some buying tips. Ebay has a lot of test equipment, some at very reasonable prices. I have all the above except a capacitance meter. Should I get one?

Nice to have but I wouldn't be without myself are

- Inductance meter
- Transistor tester
- LED tester (included with some DMMs)
- RCA shorting plug

BTW, see http://sound.westhost.com/projects-8.htm for projects on building some of your own audio test equipment.

Isolation transformer to minimize risk of electrocution and other unpleasant effects when working with grounded oscilloscope probe.

If you are building kits like Hagtech stuff, really some simple tools, soldering iron and a DMM should suffice.

Must haves if you are building and testing your own circuits:
O'scope
Audio generator
Power supplies
Variac

Nice to haves:
LCR meter
Tube tester
