I have a newbe question for all you AKSA builders out there :

I am in the middle of cunstructing my first AKSA 55 (fun fun  :P) ampilfier and after mounting the output transistors (T7 and T8) I noticed there is a short circuit between the mounting bolt of T7 and the Heatsink, is this OK ?

Thanks

Hi Orenskl,

No problem at all.  If this bolt grazes the side of the heatsink as it passes through it, it will naturally short out.  However, the hole on the semi is insulated, and the mica washer prevents electrical contact with the heatsink, and the nut and washer are secured on the pcb, which is insulating also.

So you are home free!

Ready for testing?

Cheers,

Hugh

Just a question: in the building intructions are drawings and pictures supplied?

Kyrill,

Don't worry my friend ... there are plenty of pictures to make the (detailed) instructions even clearer.  The only problem when you decide to take the plunge and build an AKSA will be if your soldering iron has a point on it 6mm thick and you solder like a crazed axe-murderer (rather than a heart surgeon!).

However, i suggest you should not solder after dinner and a few bottles of red wine ... unfamiliar instructions - particularly if English is not your first language - are better studied with a clear head!

Go on ... "PTT", as my daughter says!!

Kyrill,

The instructions supplied by Hugh are excellent and take you through the building process in a step-by-step method.  I built the amp modules to the stage at which they get fitted to the heatsink.  I then put them safely away while I positioned, drilled and tapped the heatsink for mounting into the chassis.  This was to ensure that no metal shards could get in the way of the amp units and make a nasty mess.

Building the amp involves a number of discrete stages, each one allowing the builder chance to sit-back and relax.  As Hugh says in the instructions, there's no need to rush the building - a well paced, methodical approach is all that is required.

If you're in doubt about building the AKSA 55, you could try doing a smaller project first.  This is what I did.  As a consequence I have an amazing headphone amp (the Meta 42), it gives my Grados a good sound and my confidence was boosted by success in building a small project.

I cheated in mounting the heatsink to the chassis. I cut a square hole. I then used silicone glue and glued the heatsink to the back panel. Stood the box on end (heatsink uppermost) and let it sit for 24 hours. I've built several AKSA 55's now, and it works a treat.
