I am looking to replace my current surrounds which are Def Tech BP2x bipolar speakers. Placement is currently on the ceiling (about 12"-18" behind my chair) as my room is open on the right side so there is no way to wall mount. I would like to go with a direct radiating speaker as I have read recently that they are better than bipolar speakers with todays discrete soundtracks.

So my options are limited to either small book shelf speakers mounted on brackets on the ceiling. Or I could go with a flush mount type speaker with tweeters that can be adjusted for optimal sound. I know both options are not the most desirable but with my room it is about the best I can do.

As far as options is mounting the surround speakers on the back wall a bad idea? Would mounting the surrounds on the back wall be a better location than on the ceilng? Also what would be a good speaker that would match up with the STs and Song Center? I'm sure Jim could build a custom speaker for my needs but I do not think it would be in my budget right now.

Thanks in advance for any advice and suggestions for speakers :)!

Bill,
I used NHT SuperZero's as surrounds until I got Songbirds and then SongSurrounds.  They seemed to be a pretty good match.  Not very large (8.75" H x 5.25" D x 5" W), and they came with Omnimount (or an equivalent) brackets.  I had them higher up on a wall angled down.  I know there's another ST owner who's using them as surrounds as well.

John,

Thanks for the suggestion :). I will look at the NHTs and I am also looking at the Ascend HTM-200SEs.

Bill,
I have two pair of the 200se's and they sound very good for their size and would make great surrounds.  I have sierras for surrounds otherwise I would use these.  They are sealed so wall mounting is easy.  Let me know if you want more thoughts on them.

I might have found a pair of speakers to use for surrounds. They were sitting on top of my kitchen cabinents being used very little for tunes in the kitchen :). They are a pair of ADS 200Cs that I bought back in 1980 for my Honda Accord hatchback. I used them as surrounds in my first surround system over 20 years ago. I forgot they were there then it hit me why not use the speakers in the kitchen? They are already painted white although they might need a freash coat of flat white. Hopefully I can find the brackets that came with them along with a pair of ceiling mounts I just ordered I will be all set :D.

The 200Cs were all the rage back in the late 70s into the early 80s as excellent car or home speakers.

Hi Bill,

I'm guessing you've been happy with your Salk SongTowers and SongCenter?

How have you been?

- David.

Hey David,

Yes I am very happy with the STs and Song Center :D. I would have been happier if I bought yours but that was the deal I let get away :duh:. Its funny how I was concerned about the size of the STs back then but they are a perfect fit in my room. What do you have for speakers now?

I'm doing fine other than not enough time to listen to my system :). I hope all is well with you.
