New Amp
« on: 15 Nov 2010, 04:41 am »
While certainly not new to the game, could not really find a better place to ask the question.  Though may have overlooked a more appropriate place.

Anyway, just picked up a Dodd pre and am soliciting amp recommendations.  Generally lean toward tubes, but mostly listen to rock sometimes the "sunnier" disposition is of a benefit.

Budget - 2,500, prefer to go used

Speakers - several, Chesky C1, Selah Audio Peridots, Devore S-Gibbons, and some Ronins.  Amp does not need to meet the needs of all of the above.

Thanks for the time.

I'd recommend taking a listen to Rogue Audio.  Their amps are only tubed but don't have that 'classic tubed sound' that doesn't deliver rock too well.  Their amps have lots of guts and punch while still delivering the tube midrange and 'air'.  You can get the Stereo 90 for under $1,500 used and have it upgraded to "Super Magnum" by Rogue for $700.  This is the amp I have and I absolutely love it!  There are also some monos on Audiogon that can be upgraded as well, all within your budget.

Just my 2 cents.

Take a look at what Audio by Van Alstine has to offer. With your budget, you could get a very nice new amp from AVA. I own several AVA products including their Ultra amplifiers and I am a very satisfied customer.

Not a tube amp....but SS....the Usher R-1.5.

My buddy Captain Humble has this matched with his Dodd preamp...have heard it a few times...a good match....and it will power all the speakers that you mentioned.

I think those are $5K per pair, which is twice the poster's budget.

Yes that is the advertised price, but it is best to call Monarchy.

Best solid state amp deal I know of is the Arte Forma I-150. Call Arte Forma for details.

Tubes, I really like my McAlsiter PP150 but I would not say it's a rock amp as it is so clean.

If you like the Dodd pre (and you should) why not consider a set of used Dodd 120 monoblocks.  If you keep your eyes open, they show up every so often.

There's a pair of Manley Mahi's in the classifieds.  I heard a pair of those with a Manley Shrimp once and liked them quite a bit.
