Scott's room; HELP!!!
« on: 11 Oct 2010, 12:47 pm »
Detail was missing, but I attributed it to the room from hell in which they reside.  The wife was out of town, so the furniture was pulled back, extra rugs brought in, extra raw fiberglass 703 panel placed around- the place looks like a single teenager lives here....... it all helped but it still wasn't what i had hoped.

I was ready to give Danny or Dave a call and ask for help with the room...
Then I remembered that the outlets on the fireplace wall had not been changed out with the cryoed ones.
Folks, I gotta tell you, even if it sounds odd, that a $10 outlet makes as much difference as any other upgrade in my system- more than interconnects, more than power cables, perhaps more than going from a cheap solid state Sanyo pre to the Dodd battery.  It is just pretty damn bizarre and I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't heard it for myself.  Extra detail in spades.
All issues aren't solved as this really does reside in the room from hell, but when I call the gurus (and I still need advice on the room) I won't have a note of panic in my voice.

Umm.  Ok I will not say anthing... :o

JT, go ahead and speak up.  The LS9s are on either side of the fireplace, about 6-7 feet out in the room.  Between the tile and the sloping ceilling, it's going to be a challenge to get it to sound good.

The things that I have temporarily tried, the extra 703, the extra wool rugs, have made a difference, but  sound stage depth and width is still missing.  There is also a corner trap in both corners made of 8" of 703 behind a 3.5' X 8' rug mounted on a frame- leaned at a diagonal. My suspicion is that I will need several more panels behind the speakers, perhaps in front of the wood burning stove and heavy drapes on the windows.  Suggestions? :dunno:

That really is the key question.  The lady of the house has been quite tolerant, but the couch stays and so does the 42" Panasonic flatscreen opposite it as well.  I suspect that several wall treatments can be added if  they are decorative.  Eventually though, the wife has to stay happy.
She has been surprisingly accepting of the huge new intruders into her "TV" room.

My toes are bulletproof

Scott, can you post a floor plan of the setup?  I know what it is like to have a room that is difficult.  Sometimes moving the speakers a few inches one way or another is all that it will take.  Other times a kilo of C4 is called for to fix it.  Lets work towards option #1.

I think you had a thread on this somewhere, but I can't remember where.

Help us to help you, to paraphrase Tom Cruise.

Actually, to keep from hi jacking my own thread, the room under discussion is drawn (should be drawn and quartered) in this thead   http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=80443.0
Also the photos and diagram are in my gallery.

So back to original intent here, if there is anyone in this hobby that hasn't changed their original electrical outlets to some decent quality, cryo-ed unit, Dave's or otherwise, the difference is so great that it continues to amaze me.
