What are you using to control your headless music server??

I am looking for a wifi remote for my headless music system.  Has anyone used the Android Apad?  I could get a used iPod touch but Mpod is a little too small for my fat fingers (tried mPod on my son's touch) and I would hate to plunk down $500+ (iPad) for a glorified remote control.

Right now I am using MPD but it is possible that I could move to a Mac Mini in the future so whatever I use should be configurable enough to work with diferent systems.  I would think that if it has a browser then it would be likely to work with most systems into the immediate future.

Any recommendations?

Best,
Ed

There's pmix for Andriod phones and devices: http://code.google.com/p/pmix/ and Droidmpd: http://mpd.wikia.com/wiki/Client:Droidmpdclient

Thanks Nick, those look good.

What device are you currently using.  The Android Apads seem to have mixed reviews.

I'm using a Nokia N800 tablet. Software is either mmpc or Sonata. Also, I sometimes use my Thinkpad sub-notebook with GMPC. mmpd has been beta for a long while without any updated, but it's simple and it works. Sonata is a bit more advanced but takes longer to load up.

P.S I want to wire up a simple IR LED and micro-controller to the TTL serial port of my ALIX and use my simple RCA programmable remote to do things like Play, Stop, Shuffle, Random Album. This small remote's volume buttons controls my Placette RVC; the other buttons are free for programming MPD. Ultimately, this one small, simple remote can be used for volume and and controlling MPD in the dark/very low light via feel (only 14 buttons) as opposed to firing up a backlit LCD, which annoys my eyes.

What application are you controlling?

With Squeezebox Server I use a fanless netbook connected to the web interface.  Android and iPhone apps for controlling SbS are slick, but it's nice having the extra screen real estate plus the ability to browse the web during a listening session to look up things like artist and album information.

Well, holy ****:

I've never seen music player software with so many control options, including many options for a web interface.  I think I'd just start trying them out.  You can pick up a nice little 10.1" netbook for under $300.

It nice to have options, right? You can even use a bluetooth number pad and program all the keys to any functions you desire.

Thanks guys.  Yes, I realize there are a good number of options with regard to clients.  I currently use a laptop with Firefox/Minion but the laptop has a rather loud fan that runs most of the time (older AMD processor) so I am considering buying another device that would be fanless and smaller than the 15" laptop.  I have an older iPaq 2215 PPC but I cannot find a client for this old a unit, the clients I have seen are primarily for later versions of the PPC.  I tried my son's iPod Touch and while I liked the way mPod worked I found the small screen a little bit cumbersome for my fingers.  I have access to a Sony PSP and found a couple of potential clients for it but they don't appear to be active/available any longer.  The 7" tablet type devices look promising as does the iPad but I would prefer not to spend the money on the iPad and the Android iRobot Apad's battery life looks pretty poor.  I may end up with a 10.1 " nettop but I am curious what direction others have gone and how they like the setup.

Thanks again,
Ed
