For the curious: I purchased Canare 8-conductor Star Quad mic cable (two parallel conductors per each pin of stereo balanced mic). I expected to find only one shield serving double duty as earth. I intended to heat shrink a separate insulated conductor to the jacket for an earth, then terminate the shield only on the load side.
Happily surprised to find two shields (one per balanced signal pins, will terminate both on the load side only) and a separate internal non-insulated conductor to employ as the earth.
Good job Canare!
This would be better described as 8-conductors + bare earth return + 2-shields (one shield per 4-conductors).
