Hooking Up a Macbook Pro to an LCD Television
« on: 4 Jan 2011, 05:06 pm »
Can someone please tell me the easiset way to hook up my Macbook Pro to my flat screen LCD set? I know I need one cable for video. Do I then just get another cable for audio? What kind of cable is that and where on the set does it plug in?

Thank you very much.

Apple does not support HDMI connection.  You can get the following adapter then probably figure out another adapter for your LCD display.

Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter

separate cable for the Audio

I just assumed we have similar MBP with Aluminum Unibody.

There are also cables available which have a Mini DisplayPort connector to HDMI, DVI or VGA connectors without the need for Mini DisplayPort adapters and their additional plug and socket connection.

Here are some reasonably priced ones in 3, 6, 10 and 15 foot lengths.

Newest Macbook Pro with the Mini Display port can be connected using this adapter:

http://www.amazon.com/Mini-DisplayPort-Adapter-female-Cable/dp/B0025V2VO0

Plug this adapter into your Macbook Pro, plug an HDMI cable into the adapter, and the other end into your television.

This will get video working.

To get audio working, you need a Mini Optical to TOSLink adapter, or cable, like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Toslink-To-Optical-Mini-Adapter/dp/B0002MQGRM/ref=pd_cp_e_3

Plug the adapter into your Macbook Pro, the TOSlink optical cable into the adapter, and the other end either into your television or into your AV receiver.

For audio, you could also use a USB DAC for potentially better sound quality. HRT Streamer line is one that comes to mind.

A mini-jack to RCA cable would also work if the MacBook's toslink is too jittery for the TV's optical audio input (if it has one). Some of the optical outs on Mac don't work great with certain optical inputs/DACs.

What do you need to display on the TV?

would this work?http://www.apple.com/appletv/#whatis

It took me about 3 months to unpack my new Denon AVR1610 which I bought to allow HDMI source selection - so I guess I'll need to figure out the TV streamer as well

I thought that I'd gotten all the cables needed, but the MacBook Pro doesn't seem to have an input for a Toslink.

MWG,
yes, there is a toslink output. it is integrated into the mini 3.5mm headphone jack.

you will need to either use a cable with miniToslink on one end or use an adapter like this:
