Gaps When Using Play
« on: 10 Sep 2010, 10:03 am »
Hi All

I use a WFS DAC2 powered from USB by a mac mini using Play from Sbooth.  I previously used J River under widows using Bootcamp.  I had zero problems with playback.  Since switching to Play using the Mac operating system I get these gaps in playback of about 10 seconds or so every now and then.  Any ideas?

I must say I think it is a step-up from J River.

Thanks
Bill

Bill,

A lot of us Play, and get great results so I am guessing there is a setup issue.  Here are a few things I would try to debug it.  Although putting your external hard drive and DAC on separate busses will improve the sound, I didn't have gap issues when I had everything on USB.

1)  There are two versions of Play.  I recommend using the "beta" version labeled "unstable".  It is newer and actually is better, in my experience anyway.  which version are you running?

2)  Do you have playback issues when playing the same files from iTunes?  This would rule out any issue of playing files from their current location (i.e. USB connectivity, buss contention, etc.).

3)  Check to see what processes are running.  Do you see anything making big CPU or Disk demands?

4) While checking your processes, verify there are no other music players running.

5)  Play doesn't require a lot of Memory.  If you have 2GB or more, you should not be getting gaps.

Please report your findings and progress back so we all can learn...

Hi Guys

Have done a bit more checking on the gaps issue.  It only seems to occur on play - ITunes works flawlessly.  It does not seem to occur with apple lossless in Play but definitely does with MP3's and APE.

Thanks

Hi Guys

I am now getting the issue on Apple Lossless as well.  But there is zero doubt Play is better than ITunes - it is simply clearer.

Thanks

Hi Again

Forgot to mention checked the other stuff - nothing else running or anything like that.  My gut feeling for what its worth is this could be an issue with the WFS proprietary drivers I am using drivers and PLAY

Thanks

Bill,

Are you using the "Stable" version of Play, or the Beta "Unstable version?  The Beta version is newer and cleaned up some bugs in Play.

The Beta version.  My latest guess is it is something to do with WFS DAC 2 proprietary asynchronous drivers.

Thanks
