Favorite Turntable ALA 1975(Old Dubs Catagory)

Hi people,as I remember in my freshman year at URI,the Sansui SR222 with the S arm was popular, also the Pioneer 112D,remember affordability for a college student, but I think the Technics SL-20 and SL-23 remain supreme as 100 dollar ,at the time priced turntables. No frills and solid controls, the SL-23 was automatic, and for a stiff like me this is good..they were all belt drive by the way .Mark K

In 1975, Empire TTs were big as were ARs. Duals had a nice market share, along with Sony, Technics. I also think that Denon and JVC were hitting the market fairly well. Garrard was slipping by that time as was Thorens, tho I think Thorens seen areas of the US market that were strong, but it sure wasn't around here.

The college kids' tables seemed to be Duals, as they had many dealers, were of decent quality and affordable. Although my AR-XA kick their butts.

Was the second arm tube (square) a photo optic detector on the B & O?

I started with a Dual 1215S and traded it for a Beogram 3000 (a regular pivoted arm). In college, an occasional Thorens were around (I was jealous!) and a few GA212 Phillips. Breathing on the Phillips's buttons to make the green light go on was fun. Guess I had a boring college life, eh? My best friend had a Dual 1209.

Paul,Orthobiz,I too was mesmereized by the buttons on the Philips 212 turntable which lit up like elevator buttons when your fingers got near. The year was 1975,and I was in a frat room listening to Spartacus,by a Dutch or German band called Triumverat..good stuff. While I'm still awake,in Absolute Sound there was a turntable at 770 pounds that cost 150,000 bucks! In 1975 what was the state of art, before the Linn 12.I hope Wayner gets in on this.Is it the Empire 698 or what I remember the Conniseur BD-1 which had no AR type suspention.I had a BIC 980 or 60...good stuff.I want to ressurect my AR-XA,ala VanAlStine mods 1983,but my finger for cueing would destroy any prized vinyl..any ideas?..Mark K
