Cornet turn-pop
« on: 14 Sep 2010, 12:29 am »
Hello,
I just got an used Cornet phono pre-amp.
It has a loud turn on pop at the R. channel.
The R. channel goes dead but if I wiggle the R. output RCA then I have sound.
When I turn it off and turn back on- same problem. Wiggle the output RCA then the connection is made.
I opened it up to check for short at the R. output RCA- everything looks fine.
It sounds great!
Any suggestion?
Thanks,
Ben

I think you should resolder all RCA connections. Maybe it is good to get the RCA out of the box to inspect for internal damages and shortage to the chassis.

(1) You should NEVER get a turn on pop if you follow the correct guideline. You need to let the preamp warm up before turning on your power amp or you'll destroy your speakers. The same holds true for any capactively coupled preamp that does not have a turn-on delay relay at the output.
(2) The contacts inside the RCA might be worn - replace it.
(3) it is possible that the large DC shift that causes the pop is causing your amp to go into protect mode (not sure what amp you are using).

I opened the box and study the inside with a magnifying glass. Apparently there was a little tiny bit of solder from the center (hot) pin that flowed to the outer/negative part of the RCA(female) causing a short.  I cleaned that up and the pop is gone.  Problem solved!  Thank you all for the useful suggestions.
