AVA gear for sale
« on: 19 Sep 2010, 06:24 pm »
I am selling AVA preamp and power amp.  Before I post it on audiogondotcom I want to give the folks on this forum first chance.

If this is not the appropriate place for this post feel free to remove it.

The FetValve preamp I bought new in late 1992 or 1993.  I can't find the original paperwork so don't have the exact date. I recall it was several months before I got married.  This is Frank's design in the Dynaco PAT 5 chassis.  It has the phono section, switchable tone controls,  and switches for EPL , L+R mono, low gain, and low filter.  The volume pot is quiet as are the balance and tone controls.  It has the gold RCA jacks.  Also has a grounding lug for phono This preamp can also switch between two sets of speakers if the amp output and speaker cables are wired to the posts on the back of the unit.  If this is enabled, the headphone jack is driven by the power amp.  The headphone jack does NOT have its own internal amplification circuit.

The unit was re-tubed October 2007 (tubes from AVA) and typically has seen 10-15 hours use on weekends.  It has the black faceplate and the sheetmetal cover is the old hi-gloss black paint in mostly excellent condition.  There are a couple places around the sheet metal screws on the sides where the paint has flecked off a little.  I am currently using this as a phono preamp driving the line-in of a multi-channel preamp I got this summer.

This preamp has served me well for many years and would continue to do so if I hadn't moved to a multichannel set up.  It has never required service.

The power amp is Frank's OmegaStar 440EXH, the high current model that is rated to drive low impdance loads.  I purchased this from Frank in December 2008 and I believe I am the 2nd owner.  This amp successfully drove my Infinity Kappa 8 speakers that are a notoriously difficult load.  This amp is in great condition with the caveat that a couple of the speaker binding posts do not tighten down.  I use banana plugs so this is not an issue for me.  However, I have been in touch with Frank and he is sending replacement posts.  I can install these, or send them along for the buyer to install if they prefer, as well as include my banana connectors.  This unit has also seen 10-15 hours of use on weekends since it has been in my possession.

The preamp and power amp have NOT been modified in any way.  They have been used in a smoke-free environment.  There is a dog in the house but he is not allowed to play records.

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to get into Frank's gear for a song.  I am offering the pair for $1075 plus shipping.  Paypal for payment, buyer pays fees.  I have the original shipping box for the power amp, and I believe I found the shipping box for the preamp, too.

If interested, send an email to gelv@att.net.  I can provide serial numbers and pix upon request.

Speaker posts on the 440exh amp were replaced today.  No worries about the use of spades, pins, bare wire, or banana terminations now.

Thank you Frank for sending out the replacement set.  Your instructions were helpful and allowed me to get at the posts more easily by dropping the back panel. :thumb:

Units are now on A'gon.
