Faceplate for older B60
« on: 17 Aug 2010, 01:47 am »
I've been contemplating changing the faceplate on my B60 from black to silver for a little while.  Now that I've moved and everything's in my TV cabinet, it doesn't match anything else.  So I'm wondering...

Is it still possible to get a silver faceplate?   SN 601400, Date code 9932.  I've seen two different faceplates for the earlier ones - one with screws on the faceplate, and one without.  Mine is the one without.  I also have the internal phono stage, and would like it to say phono.

If they're available, how much would it cost?   Is this something I could do, or would it have to go to Vermont?   I'm a bit handy; working in my father's garage as a teen has taught me decent repair skills (even though they'll never be up to my old man's standards lol).

I saw a thread a while back where a gentleman here changed the faceplate on his BP6.   I'm assuming it's basically the same thing?

Hi Stu

Here's the original thread.
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=80116.0

If Bryston can make up the original in silver, and I'm sure they can the swap is straight forward, I did this with my BP25 a year or two ago, 19" to 17".
On the other hand if you want the newer SST faceplate on the second gen. BR60 as I did, the chassis is slightly different, one of the internal pins on the newer face plate requires a new hole drilled into the front of the chassis to line up properly, also the top screws behind the faceplate will not line up, not really noticable so just leave them out, I just inserted some rubber plugs.

Got a new silver faceplate in the mail yesterday.   Called Bryston Wednesday afternoon, and it was here Friday.  Great turn around time.   Now for my current dilemma...

Anyone know the size hex head wrench I should use for the screws in the knobs? Either I don't have the right size, or 4 out of the 6 screws are stripped.

I have a .05 in and a 1/16 in wrench.  The first is too small, the second is too big.   I got one knob off, but the screws in the other two aren't cooperating.

I'm going to bring the knob to Sears to see if they have something, but if someone here knows, I might be able to avoid that.

Should have said I tried metric too.  1.5 mm is too small, 2 mm is too big.   I guess the heads are rounded.  4 out of 6 of them.  Not sure what to do here.  It looks pretty stupid having a silver faceplate with black knobs.

Stu

I believe I used a 1/64th (1/64" = 1.6256mm), no equivalent in mm as they only go from 1.5 to 2mm and as you discovered do not fit.
Pretty sure you did not round them off as they are pretty hardened steel.
But to get them started, once you have the right wrench and make sure its hardened steel not the soft ones you get in a dollar store, you have to apply a fair bit of torque.

I misread my tools.  The 1/16 in was too small for the ones that wouldn't come off.  The next size up was too big.  Didn't misread the metrics though.  I guess they got rounded off either at the factory or by the previous owner (I'm pretty sure the previous owner didn't attempt a change).

Tried to get a screw extractor.  The smallest on is way too big.   I'll follow up with Mike on Monday.   I spoke to him a few months ago regarding upgrading my B60 to an SST.  Great guy who knows how to talk to and explain things to regular people.

Went to the local independent hardware store - not Home Depot.  Brought in the one knob that came off and explained my dilemma.  Bought a small screw extractor.  Worked like a charm.  The gentleman explained how to use it, what to, etc.  He even recognized the knob!   Funny thing is, now my hex wrench fits in the old screws securely.

The clown (for a lack of a better word) at the Home Depot tried to sell me a screw extractor that was too big, told me to use a drill to get it (that's what she said!), and told me that the size they have is the smallest I'll find anywhere.  Real smart guy.  Had I followed his advice, I'd have destroyed everything.

I guess it's the same thing between a brick and mortar hifi shop and Best Buy.

1/16 in.

Thanks Stu,

I was close though,  4 x 1/16 = 4/64

4 X 1/16 = 1/4 (16/64)

4 X 1/64 = 1/16 (4/64)

4 X 1/16 = 1/4 (16/64)

4 X 1/64 = 1/16 (4/64)

But not in a linear relationship  between x and y  :smoke:

or

4 x   1 =  4
4 x 16 = 64

= 4/64
