N2x or N3 for near field?
« on: 14 Aug 2010, 01:40 am »
I'm thinking about going near field with my set up.  N2x or N3 in a sealed enclosure.  How do they compare size wise?  Is the N3 for near field use a good idea or nuts?

I'm also thinking it might be fun to build a sort of top end desktop PC system later down the line, with an under-desk subwoofer.

Might want to think about the N1 for that app.

For what reason?

For near field listening, I have to agree, you're going to want to stick with a smaller speaker like the N1. Anything bigger would be too overpowering in that setting. My office system is near field, I use speakers with five inch woofers and an eight inch sub under the desk with great results. I tried bigger speakers in that system (6 inch woofer), found that are the subtlety and nuance disappeared. YMMV, just my opinion. Cheers.

But.. aren't they kind of large? I think it would be neat if Danny could come up with a smaller monitor that could compete specifically with this:

and this:

for far less the price as a diy..

In fact, a system like that is a definite future need of mine and that Dynaudio system is the most compelling thing my noob quest has uncovered.

I'd do the N2X, personally.  They aren't ported, which is a bonus, are small enough to work IMO, and sound amazing from any angle.

I tried the N2X's in a nearfield environment when I demoed them and they were great for it.  You don't lose anything until you're within like 18 inches.  The N1 is smaller, but as mentioned above, the lack of ports on the N2X make them more placement flexible - especially since on a computer desk (or next to one on stands) they'll probably be up against a wall.

I do agree that something smaller would be more ideal though.  The N2X's were too large for me to consider using permanently in that application.  I didn't have enough desk left to work with.

Keep in mind that the crossover were designed by taking 1 meter measurements. So there is no problem with using any of them in the near field.

I have my desk in a nook with a closet in behind it.  It would be quite easy to recess the speakers into the wall.  So space is not a real concern.  Besides I don't do any work at this desk  :D.  I'd really like to get the best possible sound.

Thanks Danny.  Still "no problem" is not the same as saying it is a "good idea" .   Is it?  I mean particularly the N3?   I should probably add  that the little nook that my computer and desk are in is 4 feet wide, so that means that both speakers would be beside a wall.  Is that a problem ?

Would using the xls with the ports plugged give me any idea of what I'd be getting into?

Yes, and if space is an issue then a sealed version of the N1 will be great too.

Thanks for all the  replies.  I can't seem to find any measurements for the N3S.  Would it be the same size as the x-cs?  I
