Pictures of Standard Finishes?
« on: 7 Sep 2010, 06:14 pm »
Looking on the Salk website I saw lots of pictures of custom finishes, but only a few of some of the standard finishes.  Some of the standard finishes I couldn't find at all.

Am I not looking in the right place?

I see them when I go to the Songtower section and click images on the left. Anyway standard finishes are so yesterday

I'll make it easy for you

http://www.salksound.com/songtower%20images.htm

Thanks for the link.  I did see that, but not all of the standard finishes are there.

Which ones are missing?

There are a couple you won't find since no one ordered them yet.  For example, we have done a few in straight mahogany, but every one of them was dyed some color (dark rose/red for example).  So we have no natural straight mahogany to show.

Thanks Jim.

Just a suggestion, but perhaps you could make up some samples (not complete speakers, but just wood samples that have been finished, kind of like a fabric swatch?) and post those on your website so we could see what the standard finishes look like.

Good idea.  I'll put that on my to-do list.

It's just a matter of personal taste.  I don't care for busy burls and swirls and Rorschach ink blots, except on small jewelry boxes and such.

For speakers and furniture I do like classic "standard" linear grains with figuring.  It's nice to know everyone can get just what they want, including color matching.

I also don't care for ink blots.  For instance, I think these speakers look horrible:

But that's my opinion.  Other people seem to like this.  I'd also prefer to never see a driver, whereas others like to see drivers.

I think our tastes are probably similar.  I find the stong grains and swirls interesting, but wouldn't want them on my furniture or speakers (tower speakers fall under the furniture category for me).  On accent pieces they would be fine, but too busy for larger pieces for my taste.

I did get to see a pair of SongTowers in the standard cherry finish (natural?) and thought they were beautiful.

I also generally not a fan of exposed drivers, but in some of the Salks the drivers don't look too bad.  If I get a pair, I'll see how much audible difference the speaker grill makes.  If I cannot hear a difference, then the grills will stay on.

Interestingly enough, I can hear a difference on my ADS L1290s with the grills on/off, and I prefer they way they sound with them on.  They are just a tad too bright with them off.  Perhaps they were designed to perform at their best with the grills on?

I noticed that when I click on the images of the HT2-TL finishes a larger picture comes up, but there is no indication of what wood/finish you are seeing like it does when you view the SongTower images. :(

I looked again (HT2-TL photo gallery); nope, still no descriptions.  So I refreshed the page, and now the site is completely screwy with no pictures and the text is all over the place!  Hmmm, maybe it's my browser (IE 8 )?  Tried shutting down browser and restarting, still all messed up.  Funny that other sites, including this one, come up fine. :? :?

PS - Just did a complete reboot and the Salk site still comes up a mess.

PPS - Waited a couple of hours and tried again; site now looks normal except now in the SongTower gallery only some of the pictures enlarge when you click on them, the others stay small (they do have descriptions, though).  Still no descriptions in the HT2-TL gallery.

Sorry.  I tried to fix things after reading your post yesterday and really messed things up.  I think I got things back to where they were.  But for some reason, the HT2-TL pictures are being displayed in a new window rather than as pop-ups with descriptions.  The code is the same, so I'm still trying to figure out what is happening.

Thanks.  I did notice that about the HT2-TL pictures as well (new window rather than a pop-up).  Not sure why some SongTower pictures expand and some don't when you click on them.  Computers drive me nuts sometimes!
