HELP!!! MONO AMP MAKING NO MUSIC!
« on: 27 Jun 2010, 05:27 pm »
So, today I sat down to listen to some music, and was enjoying some vinyl, when POOF, the right channel goes completely dead.

There was no audible noise I heard outside of the normal clicks and pops I get during vinyl playback, the right channel just stopped making music.

I immediately shut everything off and tried to troubleshoot what the problem could possibly be. At first I thought it was one of the tubes in my preamp, so I rewired the left interconnect to the right monoblock; still nothing so I realized it was not the tube in that particular channel.

I then rewired the right speaker to the left monoblock to make sure nothing happened with the speaker, and there was music.

At this point I isolated the problem to the right monoblock.

I opened it up and looked at all the fuses, and they seem to be all okay, with nothing blown. I noted 4 inside, and one under the IEC connector.

It doesn't look like they are blown at all.

What else could be the problem? Nothing on the inside looks blown. All the capacitors look okay.

Any suggestions?

What kind of Monoblock PA's are you using?

Can you tell if the right channel is getting power like turning on lights?  Possibly a loose IEC power connector or AC plug?

Monoblock PAs???

The lights turn on as in the front LEDS that Klaus uses to light the Odyssey symbol.

No sound comes out of the amplifier itself, but it seems to turn on.

Also, when I turn it on after a few seconds, the I am assuming relay, seems to click like it usually does as well.

PA = Power Amp, I would assume?

Did you test the fuses for continuity?  I have seen fuses on several occasions that had a separated filament at the endcap and did not appear burned through the glass shell.  The fuses may be fine, but I would at least verify.

I did not test the fuses for continuity.

But, I did replace the fuse underneath the IEC connector with the spare one Klaus put there, and now music seems to be coming out.

I would figure if that fuse was blown, that there would be absolutely no power to the unit correct? So, if that was the problem, then no power should have been getting to the unit at all.

The LEDS were lit, so that would negate that being the case right?

I took out all the other fuses and re-seated them, but I don't think that would make a difference at all.

Im confused...

Should I stop using the amps? Could they be gettting ready to blow or something?

BTW, They are Kismetros monoblocks that klaus rebuilt for me like 7 months ago.

It is possible that Klaus wired the front panel AC indicator light directly to the IEC AC input to indicate that the unit has a live AC connection with the power switch on, and everything else is wired off of the fuse output.

As long as you are adequately fused with the proper fuse values, I would think you would be OK to continue use.  It may have been a rare surge, but if it happens again I would contact Odyssey as there could be a component in failure mode.

It's the fuse, nothing wrong with the amp.  I had the same problem (same amps) a while back - exact same scenario.  A power surge took out the fuse and protected the rest of the amp as it should.

I had the same thing happen.  The light on the front was on, but I never heard it click on at all like normal. I was just told about the spare fuse and will test that tonight to see if that fixes it.
