Lights out in Bethesda
« on: 26 Jul 2010, 02:17 pm »
Hi  If anyone is trying to reach me at home about a project or question, we got hit by 70-mph winds yesterday and most of Bethesda is down.  Pepco doesn't expect to reboot the suburb until Wednesday at the earliest.  So PM me if you need to make contact.  Dennis

That wind storm blew down half of our tree in the front yard. Staying home today to cut up the limbs. I can't remember such a storm that vicious.

It was blustery in McLean, but you guys seemed to get a really nasty part of the storm.

It was very quick and vicious in Sterling.  Someone told me a 6 year old girl died from a tree limb falling on her.  I was at the computer and it hit really quick.  I looked out of the window as it hit and 3 shutters from the next door neighbor flew in front of my house and then the house across the street had about a third of the siding peeled off like paper.  There were downed tree limbs on surrounding streets.  We only lost power for an instant.  I took a walk around the house 5 minutes later to check and found nothing.  I've had roof shingles blown off before in a wind a few weeks before the big snowstorm had some siding peel off.

And all is darkness.  Pepco isn't promising anything before Friday, which means I've probably lost a $20,000 German piano to excess humidity.

That's terrible!  That poor child and her family...  What an awful tragedy.

 :(  I am sorry, Dennis.

Dennis -

Although you probably won't find one, the solution is a portable generator and a de-humidifier.  We could overnight them to you if you are interested.

That's extremely generous of you, but I won't bother you with all that while you're trying to get off to the West Coast.  Maybe I can order one at this end from a distant Hope Despot.  I'm sure there aren't any left near Washington.   Thanks again.

Lights back on.  The piano and I both survived.  Now to start attacking the backlog of Salk RAAL designs.

Dennis, glad your power is restored.

A couple years ago we lost power on several occasions for periods from hours to days as the power company replaced the failing links in 50 year old infrastructure.  My wife lost patience during one outage while I was out of town.  Despite my pleas that it was a poor investment, we added a natural gas powered 12KW back-up generator that will switch on if the power is out for 30 seconds.  Of course, we have yet to need it.  My wife still feels it was worth the peace of mind.  I would have much preferred to use the funds to upgrade to SoundScape speakers.  We all have our priorities.
