Rectifier comparisons
« on: 14 Feb 2004, 12:05 am »
For those that are interested, I’ve been doing a little rectifier rolling.  There are definite changes in the sound of the Cornet, on the same scale as changes I have experienced with different signal tubes.  There’s a lot of interplay between the signal/rectifier tube choices, so I can’t provide a recommendation.  But I will briefly note below the differences I hear in my system using the same AX and AU signal tubes.

5Y3 GT Sylvania vs 5Y3 GT RCA.  The RCA is more “open”, a little livelier and a tad brighter.  Between these 2, I prefer the more open presentation of the RCA.

5Y3 WGTB GE 5-Star (6087, indirectly heated) vs 5V4G Sylvania.  The 5Y3 is somewhat richer and fuller than the 5V4 (more midrange emphasis).  The 5V4 is a little brighter, seemingly more dynamic and has a touch less bass volume but the bass is deep, tight, more defined (less flabby).  I like the sound of both and haven’t decided which I prefer.  I think it would depend on the AX and AU choice but I haven’t played with the signal/rectifier combination.

On an appearance scale, the 5V4G is way cool looking, the 5Y3WGTB is cool looking and the others are pedestrian.

I ran across the 5V4G going for just a few dollars (NOS) and decided to try it out, not wanting to pay a premium for a GZ 32 or 34.  So far, it works.  The 5Y3 WGTB is also very nice.  The trusty, durable, and reliable 270BX transformer that we all know and love may run a couple of degrees warmer with the 5V4G.

And the winner is ….

After a weekend of listening, the GE 6087 stays.  I was hoping for a frugal man’s version of the expensive rectifier, but the adage that you get what you pay for is accurate in this case.  The 5V4 definitely has more defined bass, but the 6087 is richer overall and in the long run, more enjoyable.  Two sets of ears confirmed this.

“This is a NOS 5V4G compared to a NOS GE 5-Star 5Y3GT”.

“Huh?”

“It’s two different tubes.  Do you hear a difference?”

“Play it again”

“Which one do you like better?”

“That one.  It sounds better.  It’s more real.”

“In what way?  Don’t you hear a better defined bass with the other?”

“It just sounds better.  It’s more real.”

So, the expert in this household has spoken.  The 6087 is more “real”.  And I agree.

Now, if I could just get hold of a Mullard ……

any of them. I've rolled a bunch of NOS rectifiers (Hytron, RCA, Sylvania, GE 6087, Mullard GZ32, GZ34, Tung-Sol, Sovtek) through the Cornet and agree that they all sound different. But, the differences vary depending on the rest  of the tube complement.
I eventually didn't find the Mullards to be anything special, especially after improving other tubes in the "chain". I'm currently running a Syl Gold GB 5Y3GT from the '50's, and prefer it (at least, today!). It seems to work best with a variety of signal tubes, which (for now) are Tele 12AX7 (SP)>Tung-Sol 12AX7 (triple-mica BP)>Tele 12AU7 (SP). That said, I'm not done rolling, probably never will be. The Tele 12AU7 is my latest switch and replaces a 1952 GE 5814 (triple-mica BP) which I formerly couldn't improve upon. What a great sport!
