Spartacus- Gods of the Arena

Well, I was waiting for the sixth episode to air so that I could watch them all at once. :thumb:  So far I've watched four of the six episodes and I'm loving it!  It's nearly as good as the original series, with some very interesting new characters.  The writing is very strong and of course since it's a prequel we get Lucy Lawless and John Hannah back.  Also returning are Manu Bennet (Crixus), Peter Mensah (Oenameaus/Doctore) and Nick Tarabay (Ashur) along with many of the other gladiators and assorted characters.  It's a shame it's only a six episode mini-series but it's enough to get my Spartacus fix for awhile!

I also read that the producers are currently working to cast a new actor to replace Andy Whitfield in the lead role as Spartacus.  Sadly he had to bow out of the series when his cancer returned.  It will be difficult to replace the actor playing the main character given the long layoff it should work out okay.  At any rate, Spartacus with a new lead will certainly be better than seeing the show canceled.

The standout scene for me was the beginning of the very 1st show,, actually it was a sitdown scene at the local streetside latrene, out in the open where everyone's sitting side by side, doing their business while talking business, and when done the wipeman with a pail containing a towel-wrapped staff hands it to each guy so he can wipe his butt. To me, that was as real as it gets for the Roman period and it's what makes this show so riviting. It was a crude and cruel period for mankind and it's this attention to detail that this show portraits in spades is what makes it a must see series.  Expect to be shocked!  :o

Cheers,
Robin

I really hated to see that the final 2011 episode was last weekend.  Coming into this season I had a feeling I would be disappointed based on how great the series was last year, especially with the 2010 final episode.  Boy, was I ever wrong!  I believe the 2011 series surpassed the 2010 series and I hope they continue it in 2012.

My rating for the 2011 series 4.5 out of 5 stars!

I think they did a great job with the storytelling and development of the characters.  All six episodes were well done and consistently at a high level.  I totally agree with the previous comments around this mini-season being equal to or better than the full season in 2010.

Should be very interesting to see what comes next...

Great writing and visuals.  Loved the first and loved the 2nd.  The third will be just as different as the lead of the first is out for good.  No more Lucy or John, unless they give us a Star Wars type of series, Episode II coming up!
Big fan.
