M165X's For The Bass Of the OB7's
« on: 15 Jul 2010, 01:37 am »
Hi Danny,

If I was Hell bent on putting M165X’s in the bass section of a OB7 how much XO tweaking would need to be done and how many cubic inches would the cabinet have to be? The reason being is that I can not have a extra Sub

Thanks Ben

It's not worth it. In a sealed box you really don't gain any extension (not much anyway) but the box size shoots up to 2.0 to 2.4 cubic feet.

Ported will get you more extension but the box would need to be 5.6 cubic feet.

Just go with the OB-7 as designed and add a single servo sub (SW-12-04 in a sealed box), and you are done. Then you'll have low bass that is flat to 20Hz and -3db down in the teens.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I thought it's somewhat related.  Danny, what are your thoughts on using a pair of M130Xs or M165Xs in the N3 to get more output and bass?

Hum I'll take a shot at this.  The cabinet would be wider so they would not image as well and those drivers are 8ohm drivers not 16ohm so your impedance would suck compared to the drivers used as designed.  The X drivers are also a little less efficient due to using the Xbl^2 motor structure which in a MT configuration makes sense becuase you can use the extra stroke, but when you are building an MTM you don't need as much stroke and would rather have the extra efficency of a non-Xbl^2 driver.  Overall, you might get less output because of a less efficient driver.... ???  ... ??? Also the smaller drivers have less mass and should have better decay.

All in all if the other drivers were better for the N3 Danny would have used them.  This designing speakers business is dang complicated and a real balancing act.  In the end you just have to trust that Danny made the best choices and enjoy your speakers!!!

I'm pretty sure Danny will tell you to build as desined and add one servo sub!!!  :thumb:

I think HT cOz has really figured it out.
