Hi all.
Did any of you have tried the Beyer Dynamic headphones model DT-990PRO (Open) and/or DT-770PRO (Closed) if yes, with what headphone amplifier?
Please share with all of us your findings.
I now own a pair of Sennheiser HD-570, if I up grade I don't want to go the HD-600/800 way, their are.... Wayyyyyyyyyy tooooooo expensive, for me anyway.
Have a nice day.

I do not use headphones- anybody's welcome to chime in. We do have a headphone amp on order that is using vintage iron.

Hi Blair.
Can you give us some details on your headphones amplifier ?
Photo or photos are always welcome.
Triode - pentode, restification type, power output, etc...

It is still in the planning phase since it is a new product. When it's finished I'll provide all the technical details. Guess I'll have to get a pair of headphones!

I would say several pairs!  Headphones seem to have quite a wide range of impedances, and some are harder to drive than others.  I think that it may even be a tougher "one size fits all" scenario than amplifiers and speakers.

990's are the way to go here.  The HD800's are better, but not much.  The 770's and the 650's are not as good.

I own a set of tweaked out 880s and I love them. They work well with most headphone amps I've tried and even are ok with iPhone or any other iPod device albeit rather quiet output.

Hi Steve.
I have noticed that many headphone amplifiers manufactuers claimed that their units can drive easily any heaphones with impedance from 30 to 600 Ohms.
My personnal experience with my Sennheiser HD-570 with Sony SS amplifier, Bellari VP-129 & iPod is that all of them can drive my HD-570 but without power to spare, dynamic is a little compressed, especially with my iPod. I think the impedance of my HD-570 is around 30 to 60 Ohms.
By the way, I would like to go the OTL (Output Transformer Less) way, even if Blair (Niteshade Audio) say that he can build a good unit with transformer output, the OTL is more compact and probably less expensive.
But Blair might make me change my mind and I won't mind.

Hi Pez,
correct me if I am wrong, but the only tweak you can do on headphones would be the cable, if detacheable.
To me all the Sennheiser Series 600 and up are over priced or don't give you your money's worth, IMO FWIW.

Hi TYson.
(I hope I've got your name right ?)
I agree with the above, I have been using for many years open back headphones and love their sound. My only problem is that while I listen to music in the bedroom, my wife listen to TV also in the bedroom.
Anyone have any suggestions on how I can kick out (Gently of course) my wife of the bedroom ?
Well, I think she will win again and I will have to listen to my Open Back headphone in my quiet office, anyway that where I spend many hours everyday.
I am still keeping the Beyer Dynamic HD-990PRO on my wish list.

Why couldn't headphones be made to operate at 8 ohms for a standard impedance? Forgot: The OTL crowd would frown upon that.

Hi Blair and all.
Look as if in the audio industries there is not much standardization on equipment specification and performances... Maybe, that's because the manufacturers thinks that their specs are the best way to go.
Of course if all the headphones would be 8 Ohms that would make amplifier manufaturer's life easier, but then, it would be too simple and that, most of the manufactuers don't like, because it does not make them different and or special.

The cable is not detachable, but what you can do is desoldered the junk cables and attach decent ones. I have pure silver cables braided and terminated with a rather beefy 1/8" stereo plug. They sound absolutely wonderful with this arrangement. They really like tubes as well.

Hi all.
Did any of you have tried the Beyer Dynamic headphones model DT-990PRO (Open) and/or DT-770PRO (Closed) if yes, with what headphone amplifier?
Please share with all of us your findings.

I've been using Beyer Dynamic headphones for about 15 years. The 770 & 990 are overpriced. For almost the same price, you get a lot better performance from DT-150.

Beyer makes great headphones across their whole range.  I still use a pair of DT250-250's as my backup pair (and semi-portable) of headphones.  Only closed headphones I've liked better are the Denon D5000's.

Hi Tyson and others...
On July the 22nd in Ho Chi Minh City (Formely Saigon) there will be an audio show and Beyer Dynamic with have a booth with most of their offerings including of course the new T-1 (1,295 USD) and the T-50P (349 USD) with Tesla technology, but what will attract me to Beyer Dynamic booth is their DT-990PRO (200 USD) which I think offer a better quality - price ratio. I will have the chance to confirm my thinking.
I was never a fan of high price stuff, because I don't beleive that asking almost 6.5 times more money for the T-1 than the DT-990PRO they will be 6.5 times better in sound quality, of course they will be better, but by how much ? That's what I will find out by myself, because these days, I don't really beleive anyone anymore.
Guy 13.
Of course I will share with all of you my findings, but those findings will be mine, based on my definition of what is a good headphones and what is realistic and real music reproduction...
