What to do with my old projector?
« on: 8 Jun 2010, 12:59 pm »
I have a Panasonic PT-AE900u 720p LCD projector that has over 3000 hours on the lamp. It still puts out a great picture but I now run it in high output mode and consequently the fan has to run constantly, making the projector noisier than I'm willing to tolerate. It's finally time to upgrade. I have been looking to upgrade for a while but decided to wait until the Panny became intolerable.

I believe a new bulb can be had for less than $200 but that involves installing it and taking a chance at screwing up the projector. I don't think it's as simple as unscrewing the old bulb and replacing it with the new one.

Is there a market for used projectors that need new bulbs? Should I replace the bulb and then try to sell the projector? If it's not worth anything, maybe I should give it away to a family member. It still works fine and shouldn't be thrown away (or put on a shelf in the attic like all the other stuff I don't use any more). I'm just not sure what to do with my old projector. I suppose I can just list it for sale and see what happens but I thought I would ask opinions here first.

What did it list for and how old is it?  You might still get 40% of the orig list (approx) if you included the new bulb (don't install if you are nervous) on some sites as long as the asking price isn't too close to today's newer PJ's of 720 or better resolution.  Do some quick price comparisons on the internet and see what a new PJ goes for and decide if the new bulb is worth it or let the new owner buy it by providing a link to the lowest provider and adjust your price accordingly.

I sold my old 720p pj for $700 2 years ago with good bulb life.

I've got a 720p Sanyo PLV-Z2 with two bulbs sitting in it's original box in a closet. Paid $999 back in 04' (iirc).

Not sure what to do with it. The main reason I'm hesitant to sell it is due to knocking dust loose inside and creating dust blobs. Those little nasties lay on the LCD/DLP panels and now you've created visual 'artifacts'.

I think projectorcentral.com has a "donate to charity" thing .... I think.

Also, your local school or church would be very grateful of such a donation and there wouldn't be any worry about shipping damage. Might get some dust blobs, but I doubt the kiddies would be as critical as we would.

I like the idea of donating. I really don't need the money and I don't like the idea of giving up a perfectly good projector for nothing. I could probably take a charitable gift donation deduction on my taxes and, hopefully, I'd be helping someone out.

Big Red,
I don't remember how much it cost new but it's probably around 4 years old. Here's one on ebay that's only at $250 so far and it has half as many hours as mine! $250 isn't very much money for a decent front projector. That's why I posted this thread.

Let me chew on the one for a bit Al.
Not sure I was saying *I* am ready to donate, just that the option exists.
