natman- mahalo for reminding me of Oscar Peterson Trio - We Get Requests. I gota dig that one out and play it tonight.

As a fan of live jazz recordings, here's a few worth a listen:

Gil Evans and the Monday Nite Orchestra- Live at Sweet Basil's
Art Pepper- More for Les
Kurt Elling- Live in Chicago

I don't think I can pick an absolute greatest as I tend to change my mind every few months but this month for me is:

Clifford Jordon - Glass Bead Games

Always in the running are:
Art Blakey - Moanin
Cannonball Aderley - Something Else
Mingus - Ah Um
Wes Montgomery - Full House
Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Collasus
Miles - Cookin

And of course, well....Jackie McLean - Jacknife!

Great Jazz Albums

Miles Davis' In A Silent Way, even more than Bitches Brew (which was a logical followup), forever changed jazz. I would suggest that EVERY new jazz artist since that time owes a debt to that album. In liberating the dissonant to the extent that it did has even changed pop music. It was a form of "musical permission" to do new things.

IMO, anyway   8)

Pat Metheny

Here are some of my faves and I haven't seen 'em mentioned:

Pat Metheny - Question and Answer (a classic, with Dave Holland and Roy Haynes).
Kurt Rosenwinkel - Heartcore, The Next Step or East Coast Love Affair (all great). Kurt is a unique new voice in jazz (guitar).

Here's a good SACD choice for jazz - Michel Camilo (with Anthony Jackson, Horatio Hernandez). Killer in multichannel stereo!!

Later!

Here's a few more classics I would recommend:

Bill Evans - Conversations With Myself
Dexter Gordon - GO!

If you're looking for something a little more modern, I love listening to Robin Eubanks (trombone playing brother of The Tonight Show's Kevin Eubanks).  All of his releases are mind blowing.  I am also a big fan of Yellowjackets.  "Run for Your Life" would be a good introduction to Yellowjackets.  I can listen to Bob Mintzer's chops all day long...

Someone earlier put Ornette Coleman in the same category as Armstrong etc. You may be thinking of someone else as Ornette was as avant garde as they get in the late sixties, pioneering the free jazz movement.

Try his albums Free Jazz or The Shape of Jazz to Come.

If you like these (and many don't) you may like others exploring similar areas such as Cecil Taylor, Andrew Hill, Pharoah Saunders and later Coltrane.

All of these are influenced by Stravinsky in his Ebony Concerto mode so you may want to check that out too.

Then you might want to dip a toe into John Zorn's stuff, ie Masada and Cobra.

Have fun

Hey!  Just wanted to jump in and say thanks.  Based on this thread I picked up some stuff over Christmas that I wouldn't have even considered before that I really like!  I got Kind of Blue and Straight, No Chaser.  Also got the best of Ella and Louis Armstrong.  Really great stuff!!
