New Apple TV

Rumour has it (from Engadget) that the next version of the Apple TV is going to run iPhone OS, have an A4 CPU, limited storage (16GB flash) and output 1080p.  And it'll sell for $99.

Kind of seems like a step backwards to my inner hacker.  You'd think with all of the DLNA stuff being built into TVs these days, Apple would aim for more of a HTPC.  That said, having convenient (read, "Joe Six Pack") access to TV and movies via the iTunes stores is probably a smart move by Apple.  And if it runs apps, I'm sure a Netflix player will make many consumers happy.

I just read that as well, with interest, as I am currently planning to incorporate an Apple TV (another thread).   I agree, at first glance, it appears to be a step sideways or backwards.  I really wonder if it is just to counter the Intel/Sony/Google TV integration press from last week?

I've been using an AppleTV as a music server for almost a year now.  No complaints.

What I'd like to see in future Apple TVs...

A way to customize the interface - Allow me to get rid of stuff I don't use, kinda like on my iPod.  Not delete them permanently, but move them out of sight.

Internet radio station presets - I know I can put them in a playlist, but s more traditional approach would be better IMO.

Be able to ply HiRes files - it'll store them, but it downsamples them to redbook.  Need more storage for that though, which would be fixed by...

More storage - the first thing they should increase/improve.   It's by far it's biggest weakness IMO.

Stream services like Netflix and Pandora - Netflix would most likely never happen because it would kill their video rental/purchase revenue.

iTunes should add more concert videos.  They're very few and far between.

a consumer's "wish list" for future Apple feature / functionality upgrades ?

good luck

you'd probably be better off reconciling yourself to accepting to what uncle Steve and crew know you'll be wanting even before you do

It's funny folks had this same feelings about Bill Gates not that long ago.. The resistance is strong... lol

Stu, I think they are focusing on streaming and netflix is rumored to be available along with all those ipad apps.  I agree the user interface could use some options, but the more options you have the more complicated it gets.  When hi-rez does take off i'm thinking there will be a format war.

Fwiw, there are a lot of Apple TV hacks out there to semi-easily ad capacity, reboot from external usb hard drives, etc.

Which is the main reason why I would even consider getting an Apple TV - I like having control over my devices.  Oh well, I guess Apple needs to play nicely with the content providers, otherwise, nobody will have anything to watch (legally).
