Bryston 3B burning speakers/voice coils?
« on: 30 May 2010, 09:50 am »
Hi all. New user.

What would make a 3B burnout a NS10M?

I wanted to use the Bryston to power my NS10Ms. (I got this particular one from eBay about 1 year ago.) The output of my recording console goes to the input of the 3B.

I plugged the speaker in to the Bryston, powered up the Bryston and within one minute, I smelled a burning smell coming from my NS10M. Didn't even have any program playing. I can't determine if damage is to the woofer or the tweeter, but the speaker in general is definitely burned as the smell is strong. I am assuming the victim is (are) the voice coil(s).

What would cause an amp to burn out a speaker? Anything specific with the Bryston 3B (a used one at that) that would cause it to burn out speakers?

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris,

It sounds like the amplifier passed on a serious problem from the input? Have you tried it with any other feed?

The 3B is dual mono so it would be highly unlikely to have the same problem on both sides of the amplifier at exactly the same time from an internal amp issue.

Take out your little digital multimeter, set to DC volts.  Turn on amp with nothing connected to its inputs or outputs.  Measure the DC voltage from the hot to ground output terminals on both channels.  You should read near zero volts.  Switch meter to AC volts and measure again.  Again you should have a near zero reading.  If this is not the case, you need attention from Bryston.  If the amp is happy, then check equipment ahead of the amp too.
