Setting Crossover Freqs in a 5.1 setup?
« on: 25 May 2010, 03:47 pm »
I have a 5.1 HT setup and have the ability to set crossover freqs. within my receiver for- Front,-Center and -Surrounds...how do I determine the best values?? I read an article suggesting setting all to 80 and have tried it but is there a better way to define each-should I determine each value as the lowest each speakers freq response is spec'd?? If a speakers freq response is X up to Y then should I set crossover for that X value on each??

It depends on:
1) the speakers used
2) the subwoofer used
3) the bass response of your main speakers at your listening position
4) personal preference

--What speakers?
--what Sub?
--What receiver?

The way I've understood it Ed, is that if everything is "right", then all channels should start rolling off at 80 as that's the THX standard.
That's the way I've got mine.
What slopes to use seem to be a mystery. Never have been able to find that information.

Hope that helps,
Bob

Oh, trust me dude. There's no worrying about that number. At least from a "damage to the equipment" state of mind. If it could have happened, I'd have done it by now.
So suffice it to say that 80 is "safe", but whether it's "best" may be up for discussion.

Bottom line, I'm happy with it for movies. Too many other things in the system I'll be worrying about before I worry about that.

May want to try crossing mains over lower than 80 if you can.  I think bass becomes 'uni-directional' at 60.  At least I think somebody told me that.  heck i could be wrong  :duh:

Tell us your choices.  Usually "large" means no crossover..full range.  "Small" usually has either 5-10hz increments or its much less granular than that (i.e 60, 80, 100, 120).  My HiRez music-only 5.1 surround setup (all SP tech revelations/Continuums) are all set to large, but my separate side and rear 7.1 movie surrounds (wall-hanging Alon Centris dipoles) are set to small 60hz.

I set all to small so I could pick xover setting(large doesn't let me select). Goes
down to 40 then increments of 10 up to whatever, right now all at 80. Was afraid to go lower, just because I thought
I might bust up my speakers, but I will try 40...what the hell!!

Update-to better state what was happening-I was getting some distortion with the new DAC, just on Radiohead stuff and low freqs so I thought it was because of the crossover settings.
I solved the distortion problem as my PS3 was set incorrectly and causing some tunes to clip, problem solved-now I'll try 60 for awhile as lower sounds better

Great info from you guys!! Thanks, I set all to 40 except center which I set to 60 and everything sounds better, fuller, movie dialog is clearer, CD's sound much better and more detailed. I would have never guessed I could set them so low and pull it off without your advice, I just figured the receivers auto cal. knew best-forgot about the actual listening part!!! :thumb: :thumb:...Thanks again!!
