How do i set up my laptop to work with the chime?
« on: 16 May 2010, 09:47 pm »
After building my chime about 6 month's ago i finally pluged it in tonight with my laptop acting as a music server useing window's vista.
The problem is i can't get the laptop to recognize the chime?
I get a good green light on start up but two red light's on the bottom. In the control panel i have it set for 44.1 khz and 16 bit.I have read this is the only way to hook up the chime.
I have let program's take control be checked. Is this ok?
I know that the hag dac should still be recognized even if the power on the chime is off.I tried this.No luck.
Does anyone have any idea's?
I'm useing windows media palyer and vista.

I would try the Chime with a known working combination like Foobar2000 with the WASAPI plugin. Then once you know the Chime works then you can try to get Windows Media Player to play nice if that is your preferred music player.

You may have to go to the control panel and select which audio 'card' to use for playback- internal vs usbDAC.  I had to do that in Win XP...and on a mac G4 if i recall properly.

Ok i'm haveing no luck finding where you can specify anything about a internal or external dac in window's vista.
I really dont want to buy foobar.I feel i have spent enough already:(
I'm going to hook it up to my cd player's digital output tonight. To see if it work's.
I'm reall happy with my dvd/cd/scad player perform's.The dennon dvd 2900.
I bought the chime to run a music server off a laptop.

Check out this thread. It discusses setting up the Chime with a Windows machine.

I will warn you that I was never able to set my Sony Vaio to work. I did get various other machines to operate.

If you have access to a Mac it is straight forward - go to System Preferences then Audio. Under Output select the Hagerman product and enjoy. I switched back to Apple products a few years ago for a number of reasons - a music server being one. I now have about 8500 songs on my hard disk in Apple Lossless, FLAC or Wave format.

Good luck - the effort, in my opinion, will be worth it.

Congrats on your Cymbals

Foobar2000 is free, the WASIPI plugin is also free. Google "Foobar WASAPI setup guide" if you need help setting it up, there is a lot of excellent setup tips out there, you are not the first person to run into trouble.

In all likelihood you will get better sound using Foobar with the plugin because it bypasses Windows native drivers.
Use WASAPI with Vista, only XP uses ASIO.

Select Control Panel, switch to 'Classic View' and find the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties.  You can independently select default playback and recording devices within.  This works w/ XP Pro...don'w know about Vista.  Good luck!
