Welll recorded folk/rock music
« on: 18 May 2010, 01:07 am »
Hello

I enjoy in particular, folk rock and rock music. Ever better, I enjoy, as all of you do, a recording that isn't limited by dynamic range and isn't compressed, as we see so much these days. I enjoy popular artists like David Gray, Peter Gabriel, Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson, Barenaked Ladies, Trevor Hall....you get the picture. I'm looking for music similiar to the above that is well recorded to showcase and to enjoy personally on my Bryston/PMC rig. Thanks to all of you. Dave.

If you don't have them already you should check out some older stuff by John Martyn, Richard Thompson, & Nick Drake.

Thank you for your reply. I've got some stuff from the Thompson family and also Nick Drake. Great stuff! Have to check out the other dude. Need a bit more rock in it though. Emerging artists?

Two things I heard in limited edition at LSAF that were beautiful:  Buddy Holly From The Original Tapes and Simon and Garfunkle Live in Central Park.

I picked up The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan the other day and was blown away. Strangely enough I couldn't stand Dylan when I was growing up.

You can check out some samples on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Freewheelin-Bob-Dylan/dp/B00026WU64/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1274186849&sr=1-7

Just a few notes while thinking out loud.
As mentioned earlier the Simon & Garfunkel reissues sound great. They certainly show the care originally taken in the studio.  David Crosby's dvda/cd reissue of If I could remember my name may fit your bill. Along with Jacqui Mcshee's Pentangle. The Pentangle sound is now diff but I like it and the sonics IMHO are quite good.  200 miles Cowboy Junkies is is well done live set.

Patti Griffin's latest - Downtown Church

This CD is so well recorded that it makes any system sound like a million bucks, and it is great music too.

Maybe a bit 80's for your taste but The Talking Heads Stop Making Sense is really one of the better live recordings made.

Another good live recording is Joe Jackson's Big World. I was at one of the shows when he was recording it and he was a fanatic on mic placement and room reverb etc. It turned out quite well.

Dave, Based on your music selections and recording quality, I'd suggest that you look these up....

Ray La Montagna - Till the Sun Turns Black  (sorry I edited this to change which album)

Brett Dennen - Hope for the Hopeless

Alexi Murdoch - Time Without Consequence

The Frames - For the Birds (with Glen Hansard)

If you like female vocals (in a duo) as well maybe....

The Swell Season - Strict Joy  (with Glen Hansard)

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - Ballad of the Broken Seas

cheers,
ed

Thanks to all of you for your replies. Without any offence to SteveVan, I felt that release was one of the poorest recording/engineering efforts I have ever heard, though the album was good in its own right. Keep em comin'....
