installing my kitchen system

Hi all, after planning (and delaying) the install of an audio system in our kitchen I finally got around to it.

I had planned the installation of speakers in the ceiling already at the time the kitchen was rebuilt. I ran speaker wire over the hollow (plaster) ceiling to roughly where I wanted to install the speakers.

Installation of the speakers was fairly simple:
- found the exact place for the cutting the holes with a cable/post finder.
- drilled a hole and cut out the marked circle with a jig-saw. This worked much better than I thought. The ceiling construction is plaster over gypsum-board (not sure what this is properly called in English) and I was worried the edge would crumle. Using a fine saw, I got a nice, clean cut.
- reinforced the ceiling by gluing 22mm multiplex on top
- soldered the speaker wire to the speaker and screwed the speaker into the multiplex through pre-drilled holes
- covered the speakers with grilles I had spray-painted white. Not the best for sound but much better for aesthetics....and this is not my domain....

Installation of the active part was even easier:
- standard SB2 with wallwart PS connected wirelessly
- an old JVC A-S3 amplifier (my wife's original stereo)
- Both installed on top of a kitchen cabinet. A bit high to operate the amp by hand but that's what a squeezebox remote is for.
- I used old car speakers I still had lying around: Infinity Kappa 652cf.

The result is excellent: Music in the kitchen, tonally well balanced, quite a bit of bass for such a small speaker.

I hope this will inspire me - I want to cook a LOT more food myself for health reasons, so I will be spending some time in the kitchen

in support I can say that it changes the environment/atmosphere in the kitchen. Good luck!

My wife asked me to put a pair of speakers in our kitchen so she can hear the music when she cooks.  Fortunately, the prior owners ran speaker wire (zip cord) from where my system resides to above the cabinets in the kitchen.  I am going to use the zone two on my receiver for this purpose.   I need to pull out my tangband speakers and put them to use.
