It's criminal, there ought to be a law...

Reminiscing while browsing through my CD collection I started wondering how many bands have (have had) enough talent to produce anything more than 4 or 5 "QUALITY" releases.

When I look at the catalogs of bands like AC/DC, Aerosmith, Metallica, ZZ Top, etc... yeah, every now and then they'll crank out a decent single but generally they're good stuff is spread over 4 or 5 albums.
The only two, offhand, I can think of that "might" rise above are the Beatles and Rolling Stones???

There can't be a law because the whole issue is completely subjective, and based entirely on opinion; be it popular opinion or one person's opinion.

"Quality" is completely based on someone's personal perspective; as is music on a whole generally.

I think its completely off base to also equate a band's "talent" with how much they may or may not play favor to popular opinion. Creating music that is favored by a majority often takes no more then a paint-by-numbers approach to succeed. Look at the majority of "popular" "music" floating around today for proof of that.

Personally, there are many bands that I enjoy, who I feel always produce a quality release. Of course I have varying levels of appreciation for them due to my own personal taste; but I celebrate their entire collections.

Of course on the other hand, there are bands that falter from time to time in my opinion as well; but everyone's opinion might not reflect my own.

To a large degree, duration is the key to success here. Very difficult for bands filled with talent to survive the "big head" syndrome as everyone wants to run the show. If the band members can live with each other, they will produce. I won't make a list but there are many bands that have learned how to deal with success and each others business and have put out a plethora of great LPs.

It goes to show how difficult it is to be creative enough to write a hit song. Take Yanni for example, IMO his early work was brilliant. Eventually he tended to use themes in his later work which he already used in earlier work. He was all tapped out on new ideas.

I know for myself fooling around on a keyboard. That I tend to fall into a pattern of play that is very difficult to change. The creativety dries up rather quickly and becomes boring. 8)
