Ok, time for a confession.

I've never even heard of a "tour" until about two weeks ago when you (nightshade) mentioned it in another thread. Also, I had no idea that there is an entire cottage industry of working professionals thriving on the results of sending gear around the country. Where the heck have I been? I guess I'm still living in the 1970s.

I've never participated in a tour, but I've auditioned a lot of gear in my home. The dealers that I've done business with will usually let me take home what I want without a deposit. Dealers that don't know me have required a deposit. A weekend is more than enough time for me, unless it's a keeper, then I make one last attempt to negotiate the price.
This is the way it is for me too. I like to go into a store, hang around and meet different people in person. I like to see different set ups and hear things in different settings too. This keeps the fun factor alive and the creative juices flowing. Back in the heyday when there were at least 4
high end audio stores in our cow town, not to mention a dozen midfi stores (including department stores), it was all too easy to just walk in, hang around and listen. Talk and listen, listen and talk. Most of the time I could decide right there in the store if I really liked something, but if the item was pricey or quirky, then a home audition was usually offered.
I realize that times change and that audio dealers are becoming a dying breed. Everyone (including me) wants the lowest price and a free education. However, I fear that if we are not careful we may slice off one of the hands that feeds us.
