my ob is working today
« on: 14 Apr 2010, 05:02 pm »

I decided to start a new thread for my project as some pictures have ended up in threads about other related questions I had, i,e, amps for the eminence alpha's etc. If there's any interest I will post more details

here is the back of the baffle. I have used 3 pieces of 18mm mdf, the front has a cut out that was going to got through the whole baffle, but I decided to beef up the baffle and add two more layers without an opening.

initial thoughts from a brief listen are that the bass is surprisingly good, I am running a 25w valve hybrid amp with the behringer crossover, comfortable listening levels have the amp at about 11 o'clock, the 8 " full range drivers were using 2A3 set mono's at 3.5w straight onto the drivers. These drivers are a bit of an unknown, they came from someone whom I have become acquainted with who bought the whole lot in the uk and has done some testing on them, they are 97db and rated at 10w. They have a very flat response. I think a lot more listening is required and some test readings too, but my first taste of these is favourable, something I could live with. The behringer crossover works well and is certainly a good tool for finding a good crossover point.

good on you! they look great. I think that a couple of plate amps would be the way to go. It would give you some extra gain in the bass, more than the Behringer. If you could get some good ones you would be on the way to developing a very good system I think. :thumb:

Yes thats what I have done, the Behringer sure works OK, and there is no hurry to replace it, but I think you will find you will end up with a more musical bass, with more control. I say this because thats where I ended up, but that is only my opinion :thumb:

A couple of days a go I said I could live with these speakers, now after a longer session with them I am convinced they will be my first choice and keepers for sure. Open baffle bass is a revelation. No matter what speakers I may build in the future ob bass will be for me.  Today I played a variety of music including Mozart, Dire straits, Led zeppelin, Dancing Fantasy ( who? ) Bob James, Queen, UB40, Aswad ( superb musical bass ), Sade, Joe Nichols, Erlend Oye, etc. I also took some simple measurements, bearing in mind I am bi amping, with 3.5w 2A3 set mono's and pre for the 8" full range and 25w valve hybrid integrated for the eminence alpha's adjustment was necessary to get a balance. I checked the spl from the 8" at 120hz - 75db, at 100hz- 79db and 90hz- 71db. The 15" was 85db flat response from 120hz down to 20hz, at the listening position approx 3 metres. Room is  approx 5m x 5m hardwood floor on concrete.

just ordered a pair of BK plate amps, made to order so may get them next week. Will make my thoughts known once I've had a listen with them.
