Neodymium Magnets / Grillcloth
« on: 20 Apr 2010, 06:46 pm »
Want to use these magnets for super V grill frames which should be relatively heavy using 1/2" mdf. So what size/ and number of magnets are necessary, I understand these babies are quite strong ?

Also, has anyone had experience with heavier grill cloths such as radio and amplifier types. Are these transparent enough for servos and coax driver types.

thanks, Dave

Hi Dave,
I have embedded these in my V-1 build:

That's 100 magnets for $15, quick shipment as well.

These magnets are incredibly strong, it took me by surprise how stong they are, especially considering there size.  For the V-1 bass section I embedded 6 magnets, I will be abl to tell you how effective they are in a couple of weeks...(hopefully).  What I can tell you is that they will hold the other magnet through a 3/4" piece of MDF.  I can't see me needing more than 6 to hold a 13"x29" grill on, but like I said, I will be able to tell you for certain in a couple of weeks.

Best,
Ed

Ed, what do you use to glue them in place / would they be strong enough to pull through the veneer?
Thanks,
Neil

I hope so Neil, that is how I installed them, behind the veneer.  Others have said it will work and from what I have seen I have no reason to doubt it.  I found the magnets behind the veneer by moving another magnet around on top of the veneer and it was no trouble to find them, they have a really srong pull.  I simply drilled a 1/4" hole, they fit pretty tight but I threw some glue in for good measure.

Best,
Ed

What I was worried about is, are they strong enough to tear through the veneer if not glued in place.
Thanks Ed.

If not tear through, they are certainly strong enough to pull the veneer loose.  Remember to remove your cover by sliding them sideways, don't pull them straight off.  And Definitely glue them in place!

I agree with gluing the magnets in place, Ive done this sucessfully in the past, makes for a very neat install.

Here is a link with pull strenght of neodymium magnets thought might be helpful.
