Genesis "When in Rome" DVD

As some of you know, I've gotten addicted to concert vids, even though I'm listening in stereo mode (not surround) I just like the visual bit.

I love Genesis. From the classic lineup up to, well almost the end. Yeah, "Invisible Touch" was pretty lame, but they still did some good stuff even without Gabriel and Hackett.

I was really excited about getting this one but the video quality is not that great. It looks like it was shot in standard rez TV format. The sound is a bit bright, which is typical of concert videos.

The show production is a typically great Genesis show. They were at the forefront of every new technology of stage and lighting design and did it tastefully.

Even if you hate Phil Collins for his cheesy solo stuff, he is a compelling front man. Overall though the thing seems to lack the energy of say the "Second Out" tour.

It's still worth buying though, if you like the band.

On a second listen, this is a really good recording. Not sure if it's still a touch bright or just my crummy DVD player. But maybe some of the best recorded drums I've heard. When they do the dual drum bits, you can clearly hear Phil and Chester's parts. It's not just some jumbled mess. And when Mike hits the Moog bass pedals, you'd better have good subs or you woofers may just try to jump out of the their cabinets. A couple of notes almost go subsonic.

IMHO, while I don't think Darryl is as 'musical' as the long departed Steve Hackett, he does technically rip it up on "A Fifth of Firth", one of may favorite songs ever.

Here's a story you might find funny. Years ago, I thought I thought I might give drumming a try. As the lighting director for a touring band (no one you'd ever heard of) I had a pretty good since of time, since all the cue's in those days were manually controlled.

Anyway I went to a drum workshop with Chester Thompson. I went to the restroom and there I was standing at the urinal next to Chester himself. Kinda awkward situation, but I said "Hey, I'll bet you get this question all the time, but what's it like playing w/ Phil as a drummer?" He said (quite tongue-in-cheek....and I'm paraphrasing)

"I hate that little bastard. I have to work really hard to be half way decent, and he just comes in and pulls this stuff out of his ass. He's just gifted I guess."

I soon found out I was wasn't!

BTW: cool avitar. I love the Aardman (sp?) studio stuff. W&G is just priceless.

Dunno what's next for concert vids. Maybe the 'Nirvana: Unplugged" ?

I'm much more into the Hackett/Gabriel Genesis but this DVD is pretty good. The old guys still have it in them and it is a fine and final performance for the band. Given everything I know about Genesis, that was the LAST tour as Gabriel will never get off the dime and do a reunion. I also believe his pipes could not sing most of that material. Too bad he wasn't up for the Lamb reunion idea as Hackett was IN.

Happy I got to see them in the seventies. Great band.
