Vintage & Tube "Newbie" wants info. on a circa 1959 - 1963 Scott 222C Stereomaster Tube Integrated.  I have a trade offer for one of these, but the person mentions upgrades, servicing etc... that I am completely oblivious to.

In no particular order:

• the selenium rectifier was replaced with a silicon bridge
• perfectly matched Sovtek 6P14P-EB output tubes replacing the 7189's
• 6U8A driver tubes to replace the GU8's
• "upgraded" with new coupling caps & new power filter electrolytic
• replaced out of spec carbon comps

Please advise.
Thanks!

Sounds like pretty standard set of mods, while retaining its functionality.

Probably a good amp.

We used one of these as a donor for a simple Class A triode power amplifier. It is stunning.

The 222c is an outstanding amp. The upgrades listed sound appropriate. One thing I have found (having had two of these) is that the sockets can get really loose over time. I have had to repace several that just don't make reliable contact anymore. So you might want to watch for that. Also, a general cleaning of the pots is a good idea to make sure they're not noisy. By the way, these guys run kind of hot, personally I don't put mine in a cabinet for that reason.

Go for it - the mods are good (re-capping is a must). Clean the tub pin sockets, the tube pins and treat them with Caig contact cleaner/protector.  I have a couple of these as well as the kit version (LK48-B) that I built as a teenager.  GREAT amps!

Thanks to all for the replies; but I now have more info. (see quote below) on this piece that sounds very important, but is way over my tech-challenged head!  :duh:   AFAIC, all of this may as well been written in Martian!

"I realized today when I got the cover off that this was the 222C I put Hovland Musicaps in as coupling caps.  Also, the more important caps in the phono and preamp circuit were replaced with Sprague 716p "Orange Drop" capacitors.  I mention this because I think I said this one had Russian PIO's in it.  That was another one I did, I just got confused.  Anyway, if you really wanted the PIO's I have a huge stash of them and can quickly swap them out.  The Hovlands are more expensive caps but that of course does not mean they are better.  Also, I added some fast recovery soft switching diodes to the leads of the bridge filament rectifier for two purposes.  One, it make the bridge as quiet as the fast recovery diodes (I don't think it is too important on the filaments though).  Two, it provides about 0.7v of drop out of the rectifier which in conjunction with a 10R resistor, brings the voltage back down to the 6.3v range.  The silicon rectifier is more efficient than the old selenium one and raises the voltage too high without the resistor and diode.  Just FYI and for future purchases, if you ever buy an older amp (circa late 50's and early 60's) that has been "refurbished, freshened up, or updated" be sure to ask or check and see if the filament voltages are correct, this is a often overlooked modification mistake that can get really expensive when your expensive NOS tubes start to burn out."

Huh?   I am sooooooooo confused!

Comments?

Thanks!

It certainly sounds like he knows what he is doing. Soft recovery diodes will definitely help take this amp from the usual slower mushy sound of yesteryear and bring it closer to the faster sound of today's equipment, as will the Hoveland caps over the PIO's.

BobM, the SS diodes refers to the filimant supply, if I'm reading it correctly. Should have no impact on the sound at all. If he's talking about replacing the 5AR4 w/SS diodes, I'd be really concerned about the total B+, as I think the amp runs the tubes pretty hot as it is. I'd also add, FWIW, I'm not a big fan of Orange Drops, I find them a bit strident.
