Can HAGUSB drive a long S/PDIF run?
« on: 8 Apr 2010, 02:40 pm »
It's 60 feet from my computer to the preamp and there is no option to move the computer.  I'm considering the following:

iMac-> short USB-> HAGUSB-> 60ft S/PDIF cable-> Audiosector DAC-> 2ft interconnects-> preamp

S/PDIF cable will be Blue Jeans Belden 1694A

Any suggestions or concerns?

Many thanks,
Peter

I don't think it is possible. The HagUSB uses rather common IC for S/PDIF, so it shouldn't be too different from the common devices. I think in your case it is better to use some version of multimedia device with WiFi or something other connection (between your computer and the device).

Sixty feet should be ok.  As long as the cable is good.

Let not agree with you. See for example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S/PDIF

It's not related to cable really, mainly for jitter and "long lines" for high frequencies. I tried about 15 meters (around 50 feet) cable and it seems that there were spurious out-of-sync phases.

I know that for some gear it works though. I think it depends on implementation of specific S/PDIF input. You can easily try this for your device - just connect a computer's S/PDIF output to your device with the cable you wish and listen to the result. You can also connect two computers with the cable and play a PCM file on one of them together with recording from the S/PDIF input on another. Then compare the two files (with some degree it can be done with OS utilities for comparing files).
