New to Omega with a few Questions.
« on: 14 Oct 2010, 05:14 pm »
I have been reading a lot about Omegas and am looking to make a change from my current set-up which includes ZU Essence with a Melody I2A3 amp.  I listen to everything from Female vocals, to electronica/lounge, to Jazz, to rock and wanted to get an idea if any of you think a pair of Omega's would be a step up for me.

Luckily, there is a pair of the used Super Hemps for sale near me and that is why I am raising this issue right now.

As far as my room is concerned, it is on the "bright" side with lots of hardwood and glass.  I have had overly transparent speakers in the past and those definitely did not sound good at all in this setting and as I have added the warmth of tubes and "warmer speakers"  my system has improved many fold.    I am looking for an engaging sound, that does not over emphasize the highs but also has some bass for my electronica and rock.

Please let me know your thoughts:  Do you think the Super Hemps would be a good fit and if so, what amp would you try out in the $1000 range?  Has anyone had a comparison between Zu's and Omegas?

Cheers,
Morgan

    Quick answer: Yes
Omega Speakers convey a great deal of Harmonic Information which makes them very full sounding.
Often times "Transparent" is a euphemism for a speaker that can hit the leading edge of a transient, but little else.
The several Omega Speakers that I have owned (currently the Sticks) both hit the transient and back it up with the aforementioned harmonic information.  This coupled with the lack of a cross-over and the immediacy that a single driver brings, means that you are in for a very enjoyable experience.

Hi morganc,

Many thanks for your post and ZLS has done a great job expressing what the speakers can do.

Thanks for the detailed explanation regarding what you looking for and this makes it much easier for me.

With that said I would go with the 6 XRS. They have an amazing balance and in your room would sound great.

The 8 series has a little more detail and are microscopic in what they reproduce.

Thanks,
Louis

Hello Louis

Just curious....  did you figured out the approximate prices for your new line of speakers or is it too early to talk about it?

Mariusz

P.S
Wanted to visit your new shop but thought that you must be crazy busy. :thumb:

Hi Mariusz,

Thanks and they are starting at $795 a pair with an 8" driver and 97dB.

Take a look at the new board
http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=86767.0

It's a child board right above the threads for Omega.

Please stop by anytime. I do have to finish my sound room though. If you can give me a week or two.

Thanks,
Louis

Hi Mariusz,

Many thanks four your kind words and should be a lot of fun.

Been working on this one for a while. Had to come up with a totally new driver to make it work.
It's been a lot of fun building these from the ground up. I didn't want to use existing parts for this line. It's not good to do this and it's the easy way out.

Thanks,
Louis

Louis has such attention to detail I have learned to trust his counsel.  I own multiple sets of Omegas and sometimes I forget which which I  listening too as they are that good.
He has raised the bar for all speaker manufactures who call their speakers full range and not many will catch up.

Hi tabrink,

These are very good and I'm very excited about them. Took a while to do especially because of the completely new driver. Setting the price point at $795 a pair is also very hard to do. It's much more difficult to make an inexpensive speaker sound good. The budgets have been met and quality build stays the same.

I wouldn't think of using existing drivers for this line. It would have been easier this way, but not the right thing to do. Omega and Hoyt are separate, but also together.

Much more soon and as always all the speakers are made in house.

Thanks,
Louis

Hi Mariusz,

Thanks and these are the super 6 XRS in cherry. They go for $2350 a pair.

The new Hoyt line will have a floorstander and more in the $1000 price range.

These are built and are the real deal.

Thanks,
Louis
