Progrock Records album of the month
« on: 2 Mar 2010, 04:02 am »
Each month a $5.00 full length title.  Here's March's

A Chinese Firedrill "circles" is a solo project from veteran
bassist/producer Joey Vera. Joey has been in the music business since
1981 having been involved in many groups including Armored Saint,
Fates Warning (both of which he is still a current member), Anthrax,
OSI, Tribe After Tribe, Chroma Key, Seven Witches and Engine to name a few.

A Chinese Firedrill "circles" was written, recorded and performed by
Joey from May 2005 to June 2006. Truly a solo project, Joey performs
all of the instruments and vocals with the exception of the drum
tracks which were performed by a local friend. The music on "circles"
was conceived out of a desire to pull influences from the past and
subject the writing process to an experiment in arrangements and
instrumentation. To put the necessary label on the type of music on
this record, Joey is calling it Prog/Art Rock. The record draws from
his early influences such as Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Rush, and
from more recent influences such as Tool, Porcupine Tree, Kings X and OSI.

Specially priced during the month of March at just $5 at

Doesn't look like it.  It looks like he is trying to promote awareness to a good source of expansion of the love of prog rock.  I am glad for this post.

Progrock records is a pretty darn good label. And the guy that runs it is quite nice and informative. He shows up at the yearly CalProg progressive rock festival and always has great deals.

While the label doesn't get into the real experimental side of prog, as does a label like Cuneiform. It does have some great artists.

Some of the best artists on ProgRock records are;

Forgotten Sons - started as a Marillion influenced band. On their most recent release, Innergy, they pumped up the energy and have moved into the prog-metal arena.

Chain - An interesting combo of several different styles of progressive music. 'Cities' a 38 minute long piece from their 2nd CD, Chain.exe, is quite varied and always interesting. There's also great piece based on 'The Hitchhiker's Guid to the Galaxy' , including the theme from the BBC TV/radio show.

Joel Hoekstra - a very talented fusion guitarist. His CDs are always interesting as he combines funk, blues even country into his quirky fusion. Not only that, he has Virgil Donati on drums.

Magic Pie - Norwegian 70's influenced symphonic prog with tons of melotron and Hammond. Great, long tracks with world class musicianship.

Prymary - Los Angeles based prog-metal band. WAY above the standard in the genre filled with Dream Theater clones. Their second CD, 'The Tragedy of Innocence', is a near masterpiece. It tells the very emotional story of the Drummer's wife and her life as an abused child, up through her chaotic early adulthood. Made even more poignant by narration by woman herself.

That's just a few off the top of my head. A label well worth exploring for the fan of progressive music.

Not spam, just passing along a good deal.  People can sign up for the newsletter and get the album of the month announcement themselves.

I bought Prymary but couldn't get into it.  My recent favorite purchases are Evolve IV, Dead Heroes Club and Ajalon.  I'll have to check out a couple of those you mentioned I haven't seen.
