HD-ACC

The Ultimate AV site has a short discussion of MPEG-4 ACC (HD-ACC). It sounds like a interesting development for folks who are struggling with digital storage. What does the community think?

A scheme similar to HDCD encoding is being applied to AAC files. Since ACC = Apple, and HDCD = Microsoft, good luck with the more lawyerly aspects lurking around the corner. I can already rip lossless: FLAC. Or Ogg. Or MLP...

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Yeah, not sure why we need another lossless compression codec.  I mean, it's not like storage prices are going up through the roof and we need another 30+ percent compression or anything.  FLAC, et al, seem to do a great job at 50-60% HD savings.  I suppose the backward compatibility with AAC is nice but only for those folks who already have AAC as their lossy standard......otherwise we're re-ripping.

Personally, I find WAV sounds better on my DAC and have battled through it's lack of metadata.  Sound quality is no 1, convenience and storage no 2 in my book.

From what I read, it offers a simpler way to export lower rez versions of your music. I recently wanted to put some music on an iPod, and it was bit of a headache.
