RM 40s go with my 30s?
« on: 25 Mar 2010, 07:04 pm »
I am still enjoying my RM 30Ms and Larger and looking for more HT speakers.  I have been offered a reasonably priced pair of RM 40s of 2005 vintage.  Can you experienced audiophiles give me some advice as to whether older 40s (with FSTs and TRTs) are significantly better than my not-so-old 30s with FSTs,  SoniCaps, and Megawoofers?  I think I see that these are not CDWG capable??  I could use the 40s as fronts or split them up and use a 40 as a center (if I could find a buyer for the other).  Any advice???

Thank you ....

Hi Gary,

That could go either way, but RM40's of that vintage may have Spiral Ribbon Tweeters, will  likely not have the vitrified Passive Radiator (which you could do) and they won't have the midwoofer upgrade.

I think I would use one as the CENTER channel and one for the rear of a 6.1.

If your RM30's are newer then you should keep them in the MAINS position and for HT and 2 channel audio.

I have several clients who use the RM40 as a center and would never look back.

Gary,

I have not heard the 30s, but I do use the 40s of the same vintage (w/upgraded midwoofer, TNT caps and spiral tweeters) for my mains and am very happy with them. I also use a set of RM2s for my surrounds and an LRC for the center. This makes a great HT system. I'd say pick them up if the price is good, even this vintage of 40s is hard to beat.

If you follow John's advice and use one of the 40s for center duty, I would be interested in purchaseing the other if you are anywhere near the Chicago area......

P.S. I will be traveling to Tennessee in April if you are anywhere between Chicago and Crossville

Thanks John and Brax for the advice.  Since these have FSTs and the midwoofer upgrade (I am pretty sure), I think I will try to get them.  I will listen to them to see how they compare.  I am now inclined to use a 40 for the center.  We will see how things turn out....

Now for some surrounds....

Thanks again...
